“Really nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

We went there just a week before the elections in Tunesia. There were very few tourists, maybe because of the low season, maybe because people were afraid there would be unrest. But everything was nice and calm, also in the centre of Zarzis (not particularly recommended). Few tourists at our hotel, a whole wing was closed off, some other hotels in the area were closed. Most people we saw at the restaurant for meals worked for the UNHCR which had an office at the hotel. This meant plenty of room at the beach and around the pool.
Room was good, meals were fine, but made from mostly local produce. We like that, why import parma ham to a muslim country or Gouda cheese to a country that produces cheese itself? You could always find something good on the buffet.
Personnel was really sweet and very attentive (a tip every day works). Only big flaw was the state of the beach outside the hotel area. Depending on the tide and the waves it looked more like the city dump (or downtown Zarzis) than a Mediterranean beach, but the beach in front of the hotel was cleaned every day.

Room Tip: Be nice to the personnel and they will be nice to you

“A little paradise”

After reading the reviews on Tripadvisor, we were really curious about the hotel. And we have to admit, we were a little bit afraid because of the negative comments. But we were pleasantly surprised!
When we arrived around midnight we had our first surprise: there was a plate of food waiting for us in our room, and some fruit too. Really welcome after an evening flight with less to eat!
We booked a junior suite, and were a little disappointed at first sight, because of a really small balcony looking over the parking... But we were too tired to go to the reception and decided to wait for the morning after.
When we asked if they had a room available with a nicer view, we were told that there would be another room available the next morning. The situation of that room seemed better, but we decided to wait the next morning to see if it really was better.
When in the evening we were in our room we received a phone call from the reception that a room was available (another room than promised earlier). We took a look. And were convinced this was probably the room with the best view of the hotel! So we didn't hesitate one moment :-)
Thanks to this room and its view we had a great holiday! It was great waking up with a view over the pool and the sea...
The room was very comfortable, although the bed was quite hard. But a good dark room with not too much noise, so good to sleep!
The whole domain of the hotel is just great. All done in an autentic style, and well taken care off. Only at the beach there were a lot of algues, although on the adjacent beaches everything was very clean.
The food in the restaurant was of good quality, and there was certainly a lot of variation. We weren't bothered by flies, but the presence of the cats sometimes bothered as a little bit, as they were entering the restaurant or walking on the tables outside. But we don't think the restaurant is to blame for that: we saw a lot of people taking food and feeding the cats with that. As long as people do that, the cats will keep coming...
One day there was a strike in the hotel and that was obvious: the rooms weren't cleaned, in the restaurant unexperienced people were working, hard to get some drinks, ... But the hotel did its best to deal with that problem, and the morning after everything was solved.
There was also animation, but we can't say anything about that, because we didn't participate. But the animators were not annoying at all. The staff in general was very kind and helpful (although we found it a bit strange being kissed by the cleaning woman).
I had a back massage in the Thalasso Center, which offers a wide variation of cures and massages. The massage I had was really good, and the staff there was also very helpful and experienced.
So, for us, a little paradise where we found the peace we looked for, together with good food!
We wanted to give 4,5 stars, because it was 'almost' perfect. Since 4,5 stars is not possible, we gave 4, but know that it's very close to a 5 (maybe also thanks to our room, but this is still a personal review. So we can't speak for the other rooms...)!

“Beautifully designed hotel and great pool”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2011

The hotel is designed with the local ancient architecture in mind and is very interesting with underground corridors and lots of curvaceous spaces, an interesting and beautifully designed hotel complex with gardens and pools, carefully maintained. The pool is very nice.

The rooms are comfortable and clean, large and had plenty of storage space etc. I gave the room maid a tip to change the mattress cover so it was all clean then I was much happier.

The restaurant and buffet offered good food, you just have to understand what you like and don’t like then for sure you will not go hungry. The biggest issue in the restaurant are the flies, they are all over and no one seems to care.

The beach is nice but the water is so bad, actually we tried the 1st day to go in but there was so much seaweed it was disgusting. The hotel could clean the beach as 100 meters down there was not one piece of seaweed.

If you looking for nightlife then go to Clubmed as here it’s very boring.

Waiters and bartenders will be very helpful if you leave them a tip, even just a few dinar to start then give them a little tip each day and you will find the table ready at the restaurant etc.
It’s a good place for French speakers but if you speak no French it can be difficult.

Over all I would go back there and the all inclusive deal is very good as you can drink and eat a lot.

If you get a chance take a taxi and go to the salt lake and to the dessert to see the mirages, its pretty amazing. I would skip the markets as there is really nothing there and very bad quality.

Room Tip: If they put you on a ground floor room ask to change, they won’t change you the same evening but the...

“Wonderful stay in a very nice hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

We booked a holiday for 8 days and we had a very good time in the odyssee Hotel!

The rooms was nice and spacious, and it had the typical local touch.
The badroom was tidy and modern as well.

The food and restaurant was very good: a lot of choise, including a typical Tunesian eving once a week. You also had the 2nd restaurant 'La Porta' which offers Tunesian kitchen all week; it was a pure delight to dine here.

The staff (room and kitchen personnel, as well as the entertainment crew) were very friendly and helpful.

And off course the location is a big plus! nice swimming pool, always good weather, at the beach, and a lot of green surrounding the hotel.

Defenitely a hotel to recommend!

“Disgusting”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

We arrived very tired at 12 midnight. The room they gave us was dusty smelled damp the bed was rocking from side to side, phone didnt work, no room service menu in room, no air con working, cockroach in bath, there was dust flying around the room, had to walk all the way back to reception, which is a fair walk. They changed our room with astonished looks on their faces, for one not much better. We ordered room service to be served in the reception,as we couldnt stomach eating in the room, there was a big argument room serice is for room only, so staff ordered us a ommlette and 2 beers to eat in a secluded area of reception. When the food came it was sandwiches and bottle top still on, no glasses so had to ask for bottles opening
and glasses. Their argument for sending us sandwiches instead of omlettes is, it's night time, but omlettes were on the menu! They then went around turning off the lights so no one could see us eating. So we sat in the dark to do our Internet. Suffice to say we won't be going back there EVER!
