“Return Visit Was Fab!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011

We went back in September 2011 after the revolution and our experience was as good or better than in November 2010.

For one thing the weather was warmer so we used the pool a lot. It is very clean and because it uses the ozone cleaning system, there is NO chlorine at all, and no leaves or other debris. Great pool.

We got a ground floor room (1004) with a large sunny private patio with table and chairs, which really made a difference. We also had a fridge and although the room was on the smaller side, the patio made it perfect for us.

Hammamet is the same as before the troubles and there is no problem at all for visitors...No fears of any kind.
You still get hassled by guys trying to sell you stuff though. 'Hi, I'm the waiter in your hotel'. 'NON merci'! I wish they wouldn't do that, but after a while you get used to it.

Bear in mind that the hotel only serves low/no alcohol beer, so you have to go and pick up your wine and other drinks at the liquor store 'downtown' at the Magazin General by the Medina.
You can drink whatever you bring back to the hotel in your room or by the pool. Down the street is the 'Black and White' restaurant/bar which serves great food and all drinks. (Ask for Aymen, he's a great waiter).
Across the street is the large Royal Azur Hotel, which is a bit pricey but very nice.

We usually went to the Royal Azure's beach, which has food/drinks, and you access it across the street through a tourist store attached to the Royal Azur hotel.

The Romane's beach is about an 8 minute walk to your left as you exit the hotel, and is quiet, with a hut and some umbrellas, but basic.
The Med in September is warm and clear and fantastic. Beautiful quiet beach.

As always the staff are friendly and the brothers who own it, Rhidha, Sammi and Heiki are great hosts.
You can get any excursions and rentals through Ridha (the boss).

This visit we were taken out to the zoo by a Tunisian friend we met on the last trip. It's about 35 minutes by car out of Hammamet and worth a visit. African animals of all kinds and the usual camel rides etc.

Don't expect luxury at the Romane, but the rooms are clean and basic. The showers work and the toilets flush, but stock up on TP, because the rolls don't last long. Make sure you get a floor towel as they get slippery.

We had a slight problem with flies at certain times of day, but apart from that the only 'critters' we saw at the hotel was a tortoise wandering across the pool area. The beach is devoid of flies.

We didn't eat much at the hotel except breakfast as the menu is basic. The Black and White saw a lot of us though. The night/breakfast manager Kaiss is a neat guy and will help with anything you need.

We felt very welcomed at the Romane and will be back again.

Room Tip: There are 3 or 4 rooms on the ground floor at the back. We liked it better than up the stairs and it...

“Excellent value”

The hotel was quite small, especially in comparison to other hotels in the area, which all seem to be huge! We found the staff here very welcoming and friendly. The hotel itself was clean, though a bit shabby looking in some places. The pool area also looked well maintained, though we didn't actually use it.However the food we were given for our dinner (we stayed half board) was really lovely.
I would definitely recommend this hotel, particularly if you want a personal service that you are unlikely to get in some of the bigger hotels.

I saw some other reviews that said it is too far from the town of Hammamet, and that a car is necessary. I don't agree. The hotel isn't in the town centre, but we walked there in about 15 minutes. (slow pace). Also taxis are very cheap.

“Friendly, accommodating, comfortable and very good value.”

We stayed here in the first week of October 2011. Even though Hammamet itself was coming very much to the end of the season and everything seemed fairly quiet, there was always a helpful member of staff around.

Our room was clean and quite big (albeit a little dark as we were not overlooking the pool and only had a small balcony) and was cleaned every day by a very polite and lovely maid. The bathroom was clean but could do with a bit of an upgrade - the shower tray leaked a bit, and the shower head was powerful but a bit uncontrollable (prone to flying around spraying water everywhere if the water was turned on too quickly). The only thing was that there tended to be some noise from the road (the Route Touristique) at night and dogs barking etc. When its cool enough, like it was for us, shutting the balcony door helped a lot, but hotter nights might pose a problem from a noise point of view (unless you pay for airconditioning!)

The little restaurant produced some lovely food, we tended to go for the more Tunisian style dishes (we did try their pizza but cheese in north Africa just isn't the same...), dishes like the Ojja, brik and couscous were very tasty.

The beach was very close and we tended to walk through the adjacent Royal Azur hotel (which is between Residence Romane and the sea) and pay five dinar each for a sun lounger which were out for the Royal Azur guests. This was pretty expensive (£5 a day for the two of us adds up) but we were provided with towels and some shade. The beach was quite clean and the sea glorious. One tended to get hassled slightly by vendors of Pirate ship trips, camel rides etc. but who are open to some haggling on prices if you stick to your guns.

Hammamet centre and its old medina are about a 20 minute walk away (nicest way to go is along the beach, keep going and you get right to the medina walls) or a taxi which tended to be around 2 - 3 dinar during the day and 4 - 5 dinar at night. Try and go on the meter if you can, although quite a lot of taxi drivers wanted a fixed price.

The breakfast at the hotel was good - pastries, bread, jam, fruit, good coffee and yoghurt. Sitting outside for a leisurely breakfast, very enjoyable. A few stray cats around to pester you for some food, but we did not find this annoying (I know some people do).

The staff were very helpful when we were changing money at the reception, giving us an extra pillow, sheets etc, and when we booked a trip up to Carthage and Sidi Bou Said for our last day they were very accommodating at arranging to drop us at the airport for our journey home instead of taking us back to Hammamet.

Overall we had a very enjoyable stay at Residence Romane. While I'm not sure I would go back to Hammamet itself, if I did, I would certainly stay at this hotel again. Incredibly good value, friendly staff and very comfortable.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the pool have larger balconies and I think would be quieter as they face away from...

“An Excellent Second Stay! :)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 May 2011

This was our second stay at the Residence Romane 06/05/11-11/05/11
We were greeted at Tunis airport, as we had booked transfers directly through the hotel. £40 (89TDN) one way this was a bit pricey, but we really wanted to get to Hammamet quickly 
Through our entire stay here we were always greeted with smile faces. The Three brothers Erida, Heike and Sammi who own the hotel were excellent and made us feel very at home and really couldn’t have done any more for us.
We had a lovely apartment that sleeps up to four persons, very spacious, large balcony with sea view, comfortable and clean. Beds made everyday, fresh towels & flowers. Nice powerful shower with plenty of hot water!
There is a lovely Café at the hotel that anyone can use, that does the most wonderful English Tea  As well as a general store, Souvenir store and a hair dressers!
Cabs in to the Hammamet Medina (town centre) are 1.800 T Dinar on the meter. 3TD if no meter, so ask for the meter to be turned on.

It is an easy walk down on the main street or the beach road which is a bit quieter at this time of year.

You can see the damage that has been done in the riots as you walk around. There was no trouble and we 3 ladies felt perfectly safe. So go out and explore!

In Hammamet centre, there are 2 lovely restaurants I want to recommend: Resto Vert and Angolo verde. The Medina Café on the beach front is just beautiful.

We spent many of our evenings in Havana Club! With its very unique Cuban style décor. Excellent tapas, brilliant Music, dance, urban, rock, reggae and Arabic music! Highly recommend! Doesn’t get busy until 11:30pm open to 4am! After we found a nice Café open for a coffee and cake! 7-8TDN from the Hotel all Taxis know of Havana!

The Tunisians are very friendly people, Great place, loads to see. "Wonderful Country"
Altogether we highly recommend the Residence Romane, and will be returning as soon as possible!

“Homely and Friendly Hotel”

Just spent a week from 26/02/11 to 04/03/11. Room excellent with balcony overlooking swimming pool, fridge and T.V. with en-suite (good shower with plenty of hot water). Rooms cleaned daily - flowers on bed nice touch! Staff extremely friendly and helpful with good english. Breakfast a lovely surprise with freshly squeezed orange juice, boiled egg, yoghurt, bread, cake and croissants. The weather was quite cold so room not very warm even though heating was on. I would highly recommend this hotel. At least two lovely restaurants within five minute walk - fresh fish delicious! Margaret and Keith (Ireland)
