“bed & bread-fast”

just back from 1 week in tunisia staying at les citronniers flew from glasgow sunday 16th october supposed to be 06 00 turned out to be 09 00 dont no why and there was no point in asking staff as they seemed to forget we were the ones going on holiday (wee tip for thomas cook train your airport staff in customer relations). arrived round about half 2 at hotel didnt realise it was fly season oh well. bags up to the room wasnt overly impressed but put up with this for 2 days then asked for a different room absolutely no problem all staff in hotel friendly and helpful. breakfast one of those pastry things coissoints cant spell it, lots of bread, spreading cheese and jam, tea and coffee, no eggs or cheese. all food in hotel which we paid for was excellent 2 x fillet steaks, chips & veg, pancakes & icecream 4 beers and 3 diet cokes obviously take vodka with you £30 well worth it. beach needs a good clean and couldnt sleep for people trying to sell rugs and stuff (just say no thanks and they leave you alone) sunbeds £1 each. nice walk hammamet about 2.5 miles overall 1 good week in rehab oh yeh the pool at hotel freezing but quite nice to sit at. if anyone requires info you can e-mail me at marcus_d@hillsideschool.co.uk or phone dave or nanette

Room Tip: ask for pool view

“Our type of hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

The previous excellent review almost made my review redundant. We clearly have similar likes, dislikes and views about travel. We loved staying at Les Citronniers. We liked the fact that local people ate and drank there. It added to the atmosphere. We suspected we had made the right choice when hordes of people got off the transfer bus at the all inclusive hotels leaving only the two of us on the bus to transfer to Les Citronniers! It was certainly quiet in October!
I nearly gave an excellent rating but there were a few small faults. Smoking is allowed in the dining room. The locals and some europeans certainly take advantage of this. It would not be an issue in the summer but we found it a little cool to eat outside in October. Food service is slow for locals and tourists alike but so what? We were on holiday and had plenty of time and they do give free appetizers to keep you going. Room cleanliness was excellent but some of the towels were a bit tired. Also if it rained overnight the sun bed mattresses got wet as they weren't taken in. However there are loads of positives as others have mentioned. The food is plentiful, tasty, and good value. We didn't eat from the set menu as it is a selection of the cheaper items from the a la carte menu and only saves a little money. We found it enough to order a main course with the free appetizers and sorbet you are also given. The staff are very pleasant and the owner is particularly helpful.
This hotel is not one to take your teenage children to. It really is very quiet and there is nothing to do there except to enjoy the sun, read and relax which suited us just fine! There is the pool and beach as well of course.
I agree with the previous review. The Sahara trip is an absolute must! A fantastic but tiring experience with 5am and 4am wake up calls! We also took the bus into Tunis. The 105 bus leaves from old Hammamet centre and also picks up opposite the International Cultural Centre just round the corner from the hotel. It only costs the equivalent of £2 each way and takes about one hour. The buses are air conditioned and comfortable. When you arrive you get hustle from taxi drivers who lie profusely to get your business. Ignore them. All you need to do is walk over the bridge that crosses the railway to get to the old medina which is a few hundred yards in the same direction. We stayed there for hours. It would also be easy to get to Carthage, The Bardo museum etc by public transport or taxi once you have arrived in Tunis.
I am aware that all of my posted reviews have been positive so far but that's why I use Tripadviser before booking!

Room Tip: Pool view rooms were quiet.

“Best holiday we've ever had! Can't recommend highly enough!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

We have travelled to many different countries and been to Africa before (Morocco, Kenya and Tanzania) but never Tunisia and wanted to experience something different to a typical European beach holiday. If, like us, you like to immerse yourself into local culture and experience the real country you're visiting rather than going to a characterless, purpose built all-inclusive place where you could be in any hot country with lots of tourists from back home(like Jasmine Hammamet - awful resort!), then this hotel is the place for you! We absolutely loved it - very close to the beach 4-5 minutes walk down a tree-lined alleyway with bougainvillea lining the walls; friendly beach-side cafe serving beers, paninis, salads etc.; hotel has a lovely a la carte restaurant serving typical local dishes and more Western food if preferred; excellent attentive friendly staff, very clean rooms, towels changed every day; good basic breakfast (croissants, pain au chocolate, french bread, jam, butter, spready cheese triangles, coffee, tea, fruit juice) and for an additional small charge, fresh fruit and cooked options (omelettes, bacon, eggs etc.) were available; very convenient currency exchange facility at the hotel reception. The hotel seemed to be in a more prosperous area, about a 40 minute walk from Hammamet town. There were many very good restaurants in close proximity serving very good food and wine - our particular favourites were Das Kais, ZoZos, Bella Marina and Cascades (although this restaurant doesn't serve alcohol). Over our two week stay, we also did many of the very interesting cultural and sightseeing trips on offer through TTS, one of the local tourism companies, who were very professional and reliable. Even if you only go for a week and can only fit in one trip we strongly recommend the 2 day Sahara Explorer excursion as you get to see so much of the country and experience such diversity in terrain, culture, people and scenery. If there were any slight downsides, or things to be aware of, they were VERY minor: the beds in the hotel were too soft for me (but not for my boyfriend as he found them very comfortable!); yes there is quite a lot of rubbish around the resorts and the countryside but we were reliably informed that this has only happened since the revolution in January because the Department of the Environment has ceased a lot of cleaning services until a new government is in power (elections on 23rd October); we found haggling a bit awkward, but that's because we personally don't enjoy doing it, but there are a lot of fixed price shops where you are not put under any pressure to buy anything and you can buy at your leisure; also be wary of anyone in Hammamet town who tries to convince you they work in your hotel so that they can get money out of you - we found it funny so they very quickly got the message that we weren't easily convinced but some tourists must get conned as the locals keep on doing it; also we wouldn't walk along the beach after dark because it was not illuminated but then we wouldn't necessarily do that in a lot of countries. We would highly recommend this hotel for couples and solo travellers (men or women - there were a few single women who stayed and/or ate at our hotel and they didn't seem to get any unwanted attention or hassle) and for people who want to have a real experience of Tunisia! All in all the best holiday we have ever had and would definitely go back to this hotel!

Room Tip: Ask for a poolside view if you prefer a quiet room.

“Average holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

Well all in all this was not to bad a hotel, rooms were clean and done everyday. A very boring place to sit round all day, But we did the sahara tour and saw the colloseum. Its a boring holiday for 2 weeks but for 1 week to 10 days then you can find enough to do with tours and stuff. There beach is lovely and clean but a 5 min walk across the road. its a typical tunisian hotel and sometimes men can be suggestive, just tell them to go away firmly and they listen. Shopping here was good as if u bartered you got some really good deals i got a lovely ring for nearly 40 pound less than i would have paid

Room Tip: higher floor rooms as pool arean and stuff can be busy

“A real gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2011

From start to finish...fantastic service, the hotel staff are so helpfull and friendly, rooms are functional, well appointed and clean. The hotel has a lovely pool and an ala carte air conditioned restaurant, but dining outside on an evening is best. A good menu selection. There is access to a beautiful beach overlooking the Gulf of Hammemet. Above all, the friendly welcoming atmosphere will make you want to return.

Room Tip: Rates are reasonable, no charge for safety deposit boxes
