“Super, Great, Smashing - We liked it a lot”

We reluctantly chose this hotel because we had a change to our flights enforced on us and ended up cancelling our first choice and taking this as an alternative. Strange how fate works as we enjoyed this more than our previous holiday in Tunisia which was our original choice for this year.

General review:

Hotel is clean and maintained (e.g. no broken tiles or steps around the pool) and constantly checking and touching up.

Staff were friendly and very helpful. They all worked hard to ensure our time was enjoyable and nothing seemed to be a bother.

Food

At the main meal times this was a mix of Tunisian and French but very nice and a good variety. It was mainly self service buffet but there was the option to book a la carte meals and these were just as nice. Besides that, there were pizza's and snacks available virtually 24 hours a day from various locations around the hotel.

Facilities

These were good in general: outdoor pool and an inside heated pool - both a good size and given the time of year weren't over populated so we used them a lot! There was a weights room but it didn't have a running machine which was a shame as their streets were a bit too higgledy piggledy to run around comfortably without twisting an ankle. You could book a massage - one free per room and you paid after that. The beach front to the hotel was maintained and raked regularly and sun loungers were available to hotel guests. On the beach there were refreshment facilities that included fresh water, coffee, juices and beer. Games such as bouls (?) and volleyball were available.

Entertainment

It was OK. Given the time of year it was probably wound down a bit but even so there was more than just an organ player sitting in the corner of the bar for an hour a night. We saw a rock band, belly dancer, traditional dancers, snake charmer and more that I cannot remember but it was OK and broke up the evening. Each evening ended with a dance lead by the entertainment crew and you could join in if you wished.

Bars / disco

The bars were waiter service mainly though you could get served at the bar. It was fine and service was excellent. There was one smoking and one no smoking in the main area and these were open (as far as we know) till at least 3am and we were told there was another bar nearer the beach that that was open till 6am! The disco was intimate! Enough said on that.

Rooms

The rooms are situated corridors which are painted brick with tiled floors meaning it was like an echo chamber and consequently you could here every whisper never mind every door slamming along the corridor from your room. Also the rooms were adjoining so we could hear what was going on next door especially when they didn't close their bathroom door! Luckily, given the time of year, the adjoining room was only occupied a couple of days during our stay. We heard from other guests that the deluxe and superior rooms were well worth it but the cost of upgrading on location was prohibitive.

Other observations

We went out for walks and spoke to the local shop keepers who were friendly. Obviously they wanted us to go into their shops but there was nothing that we needed as in general you bring your own toothpaste and what not but they said they were struggling because of the situation with the protests earlier in the year which put people off coming and the cut price rates for all inclusive deals which have put people off the half board options which would have generated revenue for them. It is a difficult one but at the same time we did tip the staff generously so we were putting money back into their economy through them

So, overall, we had a fantastic time and would seriously consider going back.

“Relaxing break”

My wife and I have just returned from our first beach holiday and our first visit to Tunisia. We were greeted personally by the duty manager, served a cool drink and offered a refreshing face towel before being shown to our rooms. Overall, we were very happy with our accommodation, facilities, service, food and drinks. We had a big luxury room with a large comfortable bed, bath/shower, lounge area and balcony which overlooked the bungalows beside the sea. The furniture and furnishings were rather dated but perfectly serviceable and clean. The maids cleaned thoroughly and changed sheets, pillow cases and towels to maintain a pleasant appearance. It was lovely falling asleep to the sound of waves crashing on the beach only 30 yards away.

Les Orangers is not a crisp modern hotel packed with the latest technology. Rather it has a somewhat faded charm enhanced by well-tended gardens with plenty of trees for shade and its own family of well-fed cats! Facilities include two restaurants, three bars, three pools, hammam, Moorish cafe complete with hookah pipes and real Turkish coffee. Other activities payable at the hotel included their own stables for 12 horses and jet-ski hire.

The waiter service was excellent with a varied choice of soft and alcoholic drinks. Food was generally attractively presented with a good selection of freshly cooked fish and meats. There were plenty of activities on offer during the day including darts, archery, Arabic lessons and dance/exercise to an Ibiza beat - I'm guessing here! The entertainments team were working in the evening with music, dancing and games. Sometimes the music could be a bit loud and grating but there were other quiet areas to which we could escape. We went on several tours arranged through the travel rep and also travelled independently to Tunis by rail. The public areas of the hotel were attractively furnished with plenty of sofas, chairs, cushions and lamps; the lobby area of the luxury block had special tables with baize tops for playing cards - very popular with the Germans.

The level of harassment by shop owners was less than we were expecting - one has to balance our inexperience of haggling with their reliance on the tourist spend. The greatest downside was the condition of the beach north of the hotel (towards Hammamet) which was covered in a thick layer of rubbish composed mainly of plastics. This certainly took away some of the pleasure in a beach walk/paddle although Les Orangers and neighbouring hotels did keep their adjacent beach areas fairly free of detritus. We were told that recent storms with high tides had exacerbated the rubbish situation but I am not convinced that the local authorities have either the money or the means to tackle this considerable blight on the landscape.

An apparent lack of any bin provision/collection in the villages and towns has led to rubbish being strewn in the streets, fields, pavements, roadsides and even olive groves. No doubt the new government has plenty of pressing issues but they need to consider how best to attract tourists who are of major benefit to the economy. The hotel provided a money-changing service at a very fair rate. Before leaving, I spoke in some detail to the Head of Reservations and he took on board our feedback and comments hoping that we would return.

Room Tip: Luxury rooms are bigger and their balconies have sea views.

“Relaxed Holiday”

We had a relaxed holiday in November. Great Hotel with very friendly staff , good facilities and entertainment. Every day we spent the Morning at the beach soaking up some sun and in the afternoons we headed into the Hammam with its sylish relaxation area and the lovely Maurish cafe. A few trips along the sunny beach or via cheap taxi trip to the old town of Hammamet completed our experience. Food and drinks were good and altogether had a very nice holiday. It is of course important to respect local traditions and to remain focused when buying local products. We actually had a lot of fun with the bargaining. We would definitely go back.

Room Tip: If you want sea view, you better arrange this in advance. We did not have sea view but a tranquil ga...

“Absolutely Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2011

My Girlfriend & I stayed here during the October half-term and after reading some of the mixed reviews on Tripadvisor were a little apprehensive about what to expect but what a wonderful week we had.

From the moment we arrived we found everything about the week was excellent.

Our room was spacious, spotlessly clean and furnished in the traditional arabian style and available when we booked in.

As this was our first all-inclusive and after reading reviews of Les Orangers we wondered about the food quality but have to report that we found the food to be very very good. From the freshly cooked eggs for breakfast through to the dinner where the choice was extensive and there was always something to tempt from the carvery or buffet.
The food highlight was defintely lunch where the beachside restaurant was always relaxed, and the food quality excellent with freshly grilled fish, meats and salads. The cooked to order pizzas at lunch became a firm favourite with both of us and the freshly fried crinkle cut potatos were delightful.
Whoever wrote a review complaining of the poor choice of salads must have been in a different hotel as we found the choice to be varied and always fresh at both lunch and dinner.

We tried both the Tunisian and Italian a la carte restaurants during our stay and these were extremely good for the both food quality, quantity and attentive service.

After reading other reviews we both expected to have some level of tummy upset during our stay but neither of us had any kind of problems and general hotel cleanliness was very good both in our room and the bars and restaurants.

We did not encounter any of the alledged 100 fags per day brigade mentioned in certain reviews and drink quality for wines, spirits and beer was very good and the measures generous

We have had the pleasure of staying in many high quality hotels over the last few years and can honestly say that Les Orangers was equal to any we have stayed at previously and offers superb value as an all inclusive. We will definitely be returning the near future

“Fab Holiday in Tunisia”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

Spent two weeks Oct 16th to 30th with my mother and had a great time.

Hotel as a whole is very nice and clean and not too large, it was wheelchair friendly in most areas which was great for my mother as she does need her wheelchair occasionally, but this could be improved on so I wouldn't recommend this hotel if you rely on a wheelchair entirely.

Rooms: The rooms were very spacious and very clean, clean towels daily and linen changed regularly or on request. Large terraces or balconies really nice to sit and chill after a hard day lazing on the beach!! Safety deposit boxes are not included in the All Inclusive package and therefore you have to pay for one if required, they are located in the main reception area and to be honest very cheap compared to other places I have stayed, I think it cost about 2 Dinars per day so less than £14 for two weeks. Saying that we often left valuables in the room and they were never touched. There is a small refrigerator in the rooms but it was not not stocked by the hotel, it was handy to keep bottled water chilled though and this was free from the bars and restaurants.

Food: Well I was pleasantly surprised by the food as many reviews had slated it, the food served in the main Buffet restaurant and beach restaurant were always very good, nice and hot and varied. My mother has to be the worst eater in the world as she won't try anything with spices including pizza or pasta lol, but she always found something to eat, Pancakes were her favourites. The beach hut and the pool cafe serving burgers and paninis seemed popular but it was not to our taste, the Ice cream on the other hand was great. After two weeks all inclusive the food did get samey but I expected that but the quality was always good. We ate out on a few occasions and found the local restaurants really nice, and very reasonably priced. Drinks:Wine and beer good and as is standard with all, all inclusive hotels non-brand alcoholic drinks are acceptable, one major disappointment was the selection of soft drinks! The soft drinks in the pumps were awful, tasted of chemicals and undrinkable. The main bar area in the reception did have bottled Coca Cola and Sprite (their equivalent) so ok if you got the waiter to ensure he got it from that bar, a few tips here and there sorted this problem out. But the beach hut only served the pumped soft drinks so I stuck to water and coffee.

Pool/Beach: The main pool on the terrace was quite cold but considering the time of year we were there it was not surprising, we spent most of our days on the beach which was lovely, soft powdery orange sand, perfect - wish I was still there! Beach attendants would bring you beds and a tip went a long way to get quick service but it certainly wasn't always expected. There were people on the beach trying to sell things but they didnt really hassle you much as long as you are polite they are very nice, Henna tattooists are also on the beach and I would recommend them as I had several and they were really pretty, Bedran (always wearing a cap!) was the best and he was really nice and very friendly.

We found the inside pool after a few days and it was nice really warm like a bath, great if the weather is a bit dodgy!.

Staff/Entertainment Team: The staff in the restaurants and bars were all soooo friendly, they made our holiday as they were always smiling and laughing with us, by the end of the two weeks we were having some table service from some of the chefs as they had got to know what we liked. Although tipping is not essential I felt the staff worked exceptionally hard and found it easy to tip everyone as they certainly deserved it. The entertainment team were also good full of energy but didn't nag you too much to join in, Ibrahiam or Brian as he is also known is very friendly and tries to get everyone to enjoy themselves. The shows are typical of all inclusive hotels but the were entertaining especially the interactive shows such as men against women and Miss Orangers, they were fun to watch.

The local shops near the hotel are good and similarly priced to the Medina Bazaar, Haggling is a must! and don't be worried about saying no, its all part of the experience seeing the guys reactions as you leave without buying, the price soon comes down lol!

Taxis are cheap and you should count yourself lucky if your door closes!, on several journeys I was scared I was gonna fall out I don't think they need MOT's over there lol

To summarise, I really enjoyed my holiday in Tunisia and found the Hotel really good, as always some improvements wouldn't go a miss but I think the Hotel is really trying to improve many areas by gradual refurbishment. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to my friends.
