“Thoroughly enjoyed our stay”

We stayed in the Hotel Le Sultan for just over a week from the end of October. The hotel is crescent shaped facing due south over the sea, so half the rooms face the sea and the remainder face north into some pretty gardens. The gardens at the front abut onto the sea, but the hotel’s beach is about 100 yards to the right of the hotel. We booked a top floor sea view room which had a balcony as large as the bedroom and it was equipped with two sun beds, two canvas chairs, a table and a sunshade. The room was a good size with a Queen sized bed, all in good state of decoration. There is a free safe in the room and old school TV with numerous channels. The only English language service is CNN. The wash hand basin the bathroom is not fitted with a plug, so it is advisable to take a universal plug if you want water in the basin to sluice over your face. There is also a small fridge in the room to keep your water and any other drinks or foodstuffs cool. The chambermaid looked after our room very well indeed and we left a daily one Dinar tip which was much appreciated and so the room was always well looked after. The corridors were well lit and the carpets clean.
The entrance foyer was spacious and kept spick and span, as were the gardens and the pool.
We booked full board and at the hotel paid an extra 10DTs per day per person for all-inclusive which was well worthwhile. In fact it was a no brainer not to pay the extra to upgraded from full board to AI. Booking all-inclusive through the website or through a travel agency is not possible. The cheapest rate is to book directly through the hotel’s website. Whilst the hotel will want your card details to confirm your booking, it is best to settle the bill in Tunisian Dinars (TD) preferably using a pre-paid debit card, so avoid being hit by commission charges and high exchange rates by using your CC.
The food was very good. Each lunch and dinner had about seven or eight main courses available and these changed each meal and daily. It was therefore possible to eat there and not have the same main courses during the week. Breakfast was good, although having only one short order cook doing the omelettes meant there might be a queue. Small 1TD tips to the dining room waiting staff ensured the drinks were served promptly.
The bar staff were very good and the AI deal limited the choice of drinks to local brands, but the local spirits, wines, liqueurs, mixers, beers, pastis, etc were all perfectly palatable. The AI drinks shut at 11.00 pm. Again a steady stream of small tips ensured the bar staff looked after you well. Every evening there was some entertainment in the bar, which meant most of the people could be pleased for most of the time.
Internet facilities are there, but the cost is 10TDs an hour or 6TDs for 30 minutes. However you are given a slip of paper with your user name and dedicated password so you can log on for short periods of time until your time was used up. That way you can do a daily check on e-mails and spin your fee out over the period of your stay. However beware the keyboard is the French layout, so do not expect to be able to do fast typing.
There is a dive school in the hotel grounds. It is one of only three in the Hammamat area, so if you are a diver, that must be a big attraction.
The taxis by the hotel entrance were all on meters and it was about 2.50TD to Hammamat and about 8TD to Nabeul.
Overall we were delighted with the hotel, its food and facilities and would advise that a top floor sea view room with AI would make for an excellent stay.

Room Tip: Top floor sea view rooms are the ones to book as they are large and have a great view.

“Hotel Le Sultan, Oct 2011”

This was our second autumn trip to this hotel, this time for 10 days. It was our fourth trip to the Hammamet region. We went without offspring for some general r & r, which we achieved in full ! As on our previous visit, we found the hotel layout, decor, bedroom, food, service and facilities to be excellent. We particularly enjoy the wide range of fresh, locally sourced food available for all meals. My wife did some horse riding tuition: the equestrian set-up is very professional and is reasonably priced: an hours lesson is around £15, with the rate reducing somewhat the more you do. The tennis courts are excellent. We paid an extra 25 dinars per day each to go all inclusive, which we found to be good value. We could use the hotel's Hobie catamaran at no cost, as well as some other sports gear as well as the usual lunch, soft and alcoholic drinks. We had a rear facing room on arrival this time, and decided to upgrade to a sea view room with balcony for an extra £90 for the 10 days. Worth doing as the views are so good. The beach is a bit limited and just away from the front of the hotel, but the sea swimming is excellent, as are the outdoor and indoor pools. We don't take part in the evening entertainment, but got the impression that this could be a bit basic. There is a large French ambience to the hotel, and the French population is the largest amongst the guests, followed by German and the, interestingly, Tunisian or other Arabic. Local people were very happy to discuss the political changes and we were there during the elections and were able to travel independently without difficulty.

“Ok and disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

I stayed in this hotel for a weekend in the summer (August 2011) with some friends. The aspect of the hotel its really nice. Most of it is clean, the service is ok. The main problem is that it doesn't have a private beach right in front of it. you have to walk around 60meters to get to it. You have to walk through another hotel beach which is really clean and well kept. The Sultan's beach its actually not that clean (lots of cigarettes stubs and dead algae) and you get that feeling of money not well invested... The food was ok. You expect to find at least fruits, but they were limited. Considering that in the streets and roads you were able to see lots of spring/summer fruits (and very cheap) it was very frustrating to not see them at breakfast.
Don't expect to party or have alcohol after 11pm as the law doesn't allow to sell alcohol or do parties on the beach after 11pm. The cocktails were terrible.
Be aware that to get a towel you have to deposit 10 dinars (about 5 euros) at the hotel reception (they don't tell you this at the time of registry and is not on the room either) so they can give you the card to go to the pool and get the towels (they return the money when you give the card back). The towel guy was always gone, we had to wait between 5 to 7mins every time we wanted to get some or to change the one we had.
There are better options in this city, specially heading a bit south.

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

We booked a week half-board on the strength of the previous reviews but unfortunately, our experience wasn't quite as good as most other peoples. The public areas of the hotel are mostly lovely but the rooms are small and shabby. Our room was never properly cleaned during our stay although the towels were changed and bed made daily. The "satellite" TV was a very old unit with one English language channel (CNN) and the pillows were like bricks.
The sound-proofing is also very poor in that you can hear everything from the corridor and neighbouring rooms. Our main gripe though was the food. Breakfast was particularly poor (one choice of cereal, one guy making omelettes, dull pastries etc) and the food in the dinner buffet was almost always cold. The selection was OK but sitting down to cold food night after night was annoying. We also realised after a couple of evenings that the food was totally plain in that nothing seemed to have any garlic or spice. This might suit alot of people I guess, but not us. Even the salads were undressed and tasteless. The variety was good and nothing seemed to run out but someone needs to be a bit more adventurous with the seasoning. Staff were a mixed bunch - we had to chase for everything when we ordered in the a la carte restuarnat at lunch and we had to ask three times for someone to unlock the room safe that the last guests had left locked. They also refused to provide an iron and ironing board and said that we had to use their (pay)laundry service. Intenet and wi-fi are also expensive at £5 per hour. The bar was horrendous (like a British social with comedically bad entertainment) and we prefered to go to our room after dinner. Drinks prices were on the steep side of average (£2.50 for a bottle of beer or a large bottle of water). The very worst thing though was the flies!!! I don't know what the hotel could really do but sunbathing was fustrating as you constantly swatted flies and eating was like a race against time as you were dive bombed by the critters. Eating inside was only marginally better during the day but maybe we were just unlucky and it was a freak thing given the no other reviewers have mentioned them. On the positive side, the lunch a la carte was generally pretty good, the pool and sunbathing areas are lovely and it's right on the beach. We hadn't paid a huge amount so we probably got what we paid for but I'm surprised that so many holiday companies offer Le Sultan as a luxury hotel

Room Tip: The balcony of our garden view room didn't get any sun which would be lovely in the heat of summ...

“Very good for a one-night stay otherwise question mark”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2011

Before I comment on our stay let me state that we try to avoid this type of hotel dedicated to all-inclusive vacationers with their usual daily animations, buffets and so on. In Hammamet the choice outside such resorts is rather limited.
The hotel, not too far from Hammamet center, is clean and well kept which is a performance when most of the guests spend the whole day on the premises. The lobby area is great, the outdoor area is wide around a large swimming pool. It is a bit awkward to see the personnel disguised as marine officers and crews but, may be, they want you to feel aboard a cruise. The beach is not in front of the hotel but inserted between two others with an uneasy access: stairs, steep bend in rocks and then wooden planks. Still the beach was nice and clean without seaweeds. It is a nice walk to Hammamet on the beach. Nevertheless most people remains on the grass around the pool.

Our room on the third floor was adequate and clean, facing the sea with a very agreeable large terrace furnished with a parasol, table, chairs and deck chairs. Bathroom was ok, well stocked with toiletries. Minibar was empty. WiFi was not available in the room but in the lobby at a cost.

We were on our own but at first we were given no choice but buffet diner. Food look reasonably ok though ordinary: salads, vegetables, meat, fish, fruits and pastries. When we saw everybody rushing as if they had been starving for a month, we decided to retreat. We had to get the manager to have a chance to have diner a la carte in a separate dining room where we were alone (400 guests at that time according to the manager). Sure enough it was more expensive than the buffet but it was excellent.
Breakfast buffet was all what you expect in this environment. But, when you have 400 guests it would be wise to put more than one waiter to cook omelets to avoid long queue.

Very good for a one-night stay but I would not dare to extend this rating for a longer stay.
