Reception desk manned by multilingual staff most of whom were really helpful, others were just doing what they had to.
Reception area very bright and breezy with lots of comfortable seating
Upon checking into our room, the first thing that struck me was that it was small,so went back to reception where they gave me keys to alternative rooms to see if any were more suitable,I noted that rooms with the narrower corridors were bigger by at least 10%. Rooms were o.k. but not of 5 star European or American standard, they needed refurbishing as the carpets and curtains were tatty and worn..A litre bottle of water provided everyday and was free to All Inclusive patrons.A fridge was provide which was very useful.Bathroom was of an o.k. size and shower gel etc replenished every day. We were glad to have a bath with shower attachment even though bath was a bit narrow for those with a few extra pounds. The room had a safe provided which was is of course a must. Bed was extremely comfortable and air conditioning as well as heating worked efficiently. We were disappointed that there was only one English language t.v. channel which kept showing repeats of the same films and there was also no English language news channel, whereas the French Germans Italians and even the Russians and Polish ,each had upwards of two channels generally four.
The balcony was spacious and we had a great sea view, the beach was just across a fairly busy but palm tree lined road.
We both thought that breakfast was bad and not really worth getting up for if you wanted something light like toast or cereal then fine, but if you wanted something warm then the choice was more Tunisian based i.e. a milky substance akin to tapioca was one constant morning offing we gave it a wide berth and opted for an omelette every morning, this became boring and so we went to the English bar adjacent to the hotel where they did a full English breakfast. Lunch and dinner however were very different affairs.A huge choice of food especially for the meat eater lamb, chicken, beef, being served most mealtimes with potatoes ,rice ,vegetables, fresh fruit etc. It was easy to pile on the pounds as this was all inclusive and all you could eat. The dining room staff were very efficient especially when they hoped for a big tip at the end of your stay. The all inclusive drinks offered a good choice too but not top shelf spirits, there was a separate price list for those. Bar service varied from waiter to waiter with some thinking those on all inclusive had to come to the bar to get their beverages and they were only to fetch drinks for paying customers, after words with management this was eventually put right and those waiters who thought they were above serving all inclusive customers, begrudgingly did so There were several restaurant where you could dine at different times of the day, must admit that in the pizza restaurant it was the worst tasting pizza we had ever tasted and as soon as the barman come waiter come pizza maker turned his back,we made a hasty getaway leaving most of the pizza on the plate.we wondered why that restaurant was never busy. Now we knew!!
The hotel grounds were well tended and the large open air pool with plenty of sunbeds was alas too cold to swim in but the indoor pool was excellent with temperatures reminiscent of the Caribbean sea. Was not too keen on the towel deposit idea which would be refunded at the end of your holiday as they did not want you to use the towels provided in your bathroom. At night they provided an entertainment programme , mostly dancing or singing on one night there was a fun strong man show.Outside of this there is no entertainment in the hotel. There were a couple of booking desks in the hotel should you want to book quad biking or a boat excursion,it got a bit tiresome being asked on a daily basis if we had decided to go on the trip that day, towards the end of the stay we had to be a bit terse and said to basically leave us alone,we're not interested.
The spa in the hotel is really expensive,we only saw two people use it in seven days. There is a Hammam in the Medina behind the hotel which charges less than half what the hotel spa does and although not as modern or high tech is every bit as good.Shane it was so hidden though near one of the entrances to the Medina upstairs at a dead end.
To the rear of the hotel is a small Medina( 5-10 minutes walk depending on your speed of pace)They have many restaurants a lot of them show football when its on t.v. which the Tunisians really get into. They have several shops and stalls and haggling is the only way to secure a purchase,we found them a bit aggressive and quoting high prices because there were not too many tourists around because of the recent troubles and we had to visit some shops two or three times to get a decent price. The main Medina which is a 20 minute cab ride away(£5/$8) (Apparently the hotel runs a free bus,but we were told only in high season) was worse there they were quite frankly unpleasant as well as being hostile, all the tourists were saying the same thing,we opted for the sanctuary of a fixed price shop within the Medina and we made all our purchases there without any hassle from the owner or staff much to the dismay of those harassing people outside.
Hammermet is an o.k. resort but not as varied as Sousse or Port El Kantaoui
Room Tip: Rooms on sections where they have smaller corridors tend to be at least 10% bigger
