This Sunwing hotel is located on the Bangtao beach, which - on Thailand standards - is quite average: There is plenty of room on the beach if you use some efforts to walk a bit north from the hotel. The scenery is not very beautiful, though. The sand is not very white, there is not really nature close by, and there are a lot of not-so-fancy shacks all over the place. The sunbeds look dirty - they have probably been in use for years. Water is sandy with little visibility for snorkelling etc.
As to the hotel itself, there are many swimming pools to choose from, which are pretty good, but they are packed with families with small children. The sunbeds (at least the best ones) are occupied already as of 9 am for the whole day, even though this is not permitted according to the pool rules.
Our room ("Happy baby suite") was ok, but the housekeeping could have done a better job. Room was quite old and worn. Happy baby suites have their own small yard with sunbeds, but rooms are facing north so forget sunbaths on your own patio... The bed was of not very good quality.
But in overall, the hotel area is very nice and tidy and looks pretty good.
Service at the restaurants was good, the kids are especially taken into account very well. The bartenders, however, lacked customer service spirit in my opinion.
La Tasca serves decent (fast) food, and Fino has really nice steaks etc.with a nice atmosphere (would be even better if it would be located closer to the beach).
Breakfast is not very relaxing, since the big restaurant is filled with people running around and the waitresses serving coffee are quite busy. But food-wise the breakfast is good with all the traditional servings.
If you are travelling with small children and if you are happy with just relaxing at the pools and enjoying the sun, drinks & food, Sunwing will do the trick. But if you are after something more paradise-like (many of those places in Thailand), maybe you should skip Bangtao and go somewhere else.
