“Average, average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

This Sunwing hotel is located on the Bangtao beach, which - on Thailand standards - is quite average: There is plenty of room on the beach if you use some efforts to walk a bit north from the hotel. The scenery is not very beautiful, though. The sand is not very white, there is not really nature close by, and there are a lot of not-so-fancy shacks all over the place. The sunbeds look dirty - they have probably been in use for years. Water is sandy with little visibility for snorkelling etc.

As to the hotel itself, there are many swimming pools to choose from, which are pretty good, but they are packed with families with small children. The sunbeds (at least the best ones) are occupied already as of 9 am for the whole day, even though this is not permitted according to the pool rules.

Our room ("Happy baby suite") was ok, but the housekeeping could have done a better job. Room was quite old and worn. Happy baby suites have their own small yard with sunbeds, but rooms are facing north so forget sunbaths on your own patio... The bed was of not very good quality.

But in overall, the hotel area is very nice and tidy and looks pretty good.

Service at the restaurants was good, the kids are especially taken into account very well. The bartenders, however, lacked customer service spirit in my opinion.

La Tasca serves decent (fast) food, and Fino has really nice steaks etc.with a nice atmosphere (would be even better if it would be located closer to the beach).
Breakfast is not very relaxing, since the big restaurant is filled with people running around and the waitresses serving coffee are quite busy. But food-wise the breakfast is good with all the traditional servings.

If you are travelling with small children and if you are happy with just relaxing at the pools and enjoying the sun, drinks & food, Sunwing will do the trick. But if you are after something more paradise-like (many of those places in Thailand), maybe you should skip Bangtao and go somewhere else.

“Lovely place not so good hotel resort”

Just came back from two weeks at Sunwing in Thailand. The hotel is perfect located on a very nice 8 km long beach. It has some nice restaurants on the beach and som hundred metres up the road is a Tesco market, hair dresser, McDonalds etc. Also recomends the minigolf to the right when you go out of the hotel. It is a 18 hole very nice golf, with the best pizza we've tried in Phuket.
As for the hotel it have some flaws. The pools are big and clean, but with too much chlorine. The La Tasca restaurant is not very nice. Bad service, you have to wait for ages to get the check. Very crowded for breakfast and lunch. The coffe they serve for breakfast is terrible. And the prices are too high for Thailand standard. But the smaller children like the shows in the evening, but our children are 10 and 17 years old and it gets a bit boring so next time we will be staying at a hotel further south on Phuket. Also the internet is very expencive. So would not rate this more than a 3 star hotel.

“Good family hotel but high markups on food & drinks”

good hotel overall, well situated on the long Bangtao Beach roughly 10 min walk to small community centres. Rooms very tidy and housekeeping kept them faultlessly clean all days.
Unfortunately some draw-backs holding down the rating:
- very homogeneous crowd: families with small children from Scandinavia and Russians - at least 90% of guests where in one of these two categories.
- fully booked over the holidays, which means that by 9.15 all sunbeds were taken for the day.
- all pools full of playing children so expect to get splashed whereever you go...
- really clean pools, but unfortunately this comes at the cost of using very high levels of chlorine, so if you are in any way sensitive to this bring swim goggles!!!
- the activity staff were really good and multilingual (two Scandi girls) but since they were only two persons the offering of different activities was limited to three-four per day: fitness classes and water games.
- big pond just behind the hotel = excellent mosquito farm. My record was five stings in one day but some of the small children were worse off.
- bars very expensive - a coke costs 12 baht in a supermarket, 25 baht in the hotel minimarket and 70 baht in the restaurants and the bar. One pizza costs some 300 baht which I think is quite high for Thailand.
- childrens club excellent -very good personnel talking both Swedish and English but they close for a paid event between 11.30 and 1, which is unfortunate as these are the hours when you would like to get the kids out of the sun.
- hotel charges 200 baht for one hour of internet (which worked really well, btw)

Room Tip: choose house 3 or 4 if you want to have elevator. Avoid the suites with direct pool access since the...

“Awesome hotel for family with young children”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 December 2011

My family with three young children just came back from wonderful trip in Phuket. We chose Sunwing at Bangtao because of its location. We love Bangtao as it is quiet compared to other popular areas like Patong or Kata. As we rented a car, the secluded location was not a problem for us. Because of its location, we could understand why the resort offers great activities for the kids the whole day. I love the room (we stayed at the ground floor with access to the swimming pool). I love the curtain that separate the king-sized bed and the children's beds, giving parents some privacy. My room has a microwave, full cutlery and even a washing detergent. Great stuff if you want to heat up your food to avoid eating at the expensive restaurant in the hotel.

“December 2011 bangtao sunwing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011

Resort is excellent for couples with kids. This was my first time visiting a resort that's catered to families with children. Let me list pros and cons of this place, pros first: 1) 45 min transfer to airport in nice comfortable minivan friendly driver who came on-time at airport. 2) Go for ground floor royal suites, the balcony opens to the pool and a short walk from beach. 3) Rooms quite nice and spacious. Remember its 4 star so don't expect 5 star quality but nevertheless royal rooms could pass for a 5 star in many countries. 4) Friendly staff everyone smiles and seems caring. 5) Kids activities plenty - something you wont find in hotels - they have a 'miniland' which is equipped with plenty toys, outdoor play-area, etc. They also have staff who will keep your kids busy, etc. 6) Nice beach and not busy at all. White sand and water is clear and safe. Boat rides 1000 baht and scam-free Jet ski at 1500 baht if you can negotiate. 7) Plenty of excursions to Phi-phi, etc. but as bangtao is on the other side of phuket, the journey to phiphi and back is a whole day's trip costing about 1500 baht per person. 8) The pool infront of the royal suite is massive and excellent and pool chairs were good and well maintained. 9) Nice live entertaining shows for children, happens twice a week it seemed. .

Now the cons: 1) Food at La tasca is OK if you are going to have to for a couple days. Then it gets boring. Plenty local options on the beach though and cheaper as well. Plenty fish on the menu. About 400 baht for fish. Breakfast at La Tasca not very exciting, definitely not 4 or 5 star hotel standard. 2) 99.9% of the guests were scandanavian. A more multicultural mix would have been nice. 3) Very limited english spoken in Phuket in general (you will be surprised how little english they know). Though reception desk spoke english. 4) Internet did not come free with our room and it was disappointing to see that they charge around 200 baht for an hour's usage. There is wifi in all the rooms and I would have put 5 stars if they provided free internet. 5) Bang-tao seemed like a suburb, a little under-developed. There is not much to see in Bang-tao and you may find it a little disappointing, given the stark contrast between what's inside and outside the resort. Round trip to near-by city with hospitals, etc is 1200 baht. Be prepared to spend most of the time within the resort, did not venture to Laguna, kamala, surin etc. so cannot comment.
