I am going to keep this brief. Firstly my background - I have worked in the travel industry for last 20 years and currently hold a management position with one of the worlds largest customer service orgs. Travel regularly and have exposure to many world class establishments. This is NOT one of them lets be very clear.
The place is " nice " and I am being intentionally bland here because that's how the resort makes me feel. It has obviously been in operation for many years and it shows.. On the surface it looks great but scratch the surface and you can see the cracks. The rooms are spotless and the staff wonderfully friendly (having said that we have seen the GM at least once every day since our arrival and he has yet to say hello or introduce himself!) in terms of staffing - even though the staff bend over backwards to please, their level of English is basic and service suffers as a result. ( for example last night we ordered some drinks to be brought to our room along with a bucket of ice. We received a bucket of ice but no drinks and the staff member apologised but said she couldn't speak English!)..... Hmmmmm are you getting my drift here? This is no slick operation !
All in all it's OK, and I mean OK. If perhaps you are not that well travelled you may think its very nice but for the descerning traveller - proceed with caution because I really feel I could have spent my money elsewhere. I guess it's a question of what you want and what your used to....
Also the name says it all really but the location of the resort is above Surin beach ( not the best beach and rather run down in parts ) on a SERIOUSLY steep mountain side. Even though there are buggies to transport you to the rooms, the buggies do not stop directly outside the rooms and some villas are still a decent walk from the drop off point ( something to think about should you have trouble with steps ).
The resorts best asset is the delightful and very professional Front Office Manager, Mrs Napapach Klommanee who very deservedly holds this position. She presents so well with the customer at the heart of everything she does, and has an excellent command of English. In short we have had an OK time at the Ayara but would we return, hmmmmm that's a tough one!! I think for what you pay to stay here, the GM needs to drive things with a little more vigour and I would certainly expect things to be a tad sharper all round.
p.s. great catering staff and great
breakfast buffet. The resort lacks atmosphere in general and the pool bar ( which technically should be inviting ) is unattended ?? How do I attract a member of staff when I need a drink ?
