“Layan Beach, trouble at paradise?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2006

In general, the Hotel is located in the north of the Laguna area but the beach located in front of the hotel is not very nice. It is very shallow and during the tide it transforms itself in a big sand plain (some would say it is nice). Two small creeks end there but the water
looks OK.

The Hotel has a shuttle bus (no cost) to the northern part of the Laguna area beach. This beach is good and you can walk there to the hotel if the tide is low. The hotel is constructed on a Hillside, which makes healthy exercise for adults, but seniors with disabilities or small children should reconsider due to the many stairs.

The Rooms are located in units which some have up to 8 rooms. The vegetation and the limited number of rooms makes you feel quite well. The rooms were big enough and the interior in good conditions; the bath was also OK.

Still the hotel lacks of a competent management. I know they do what they can but this is simply below what you expect:
* The restaurant was simply bad, the service was not attentive, the table cloth dirty, the food was not tasty.
* The bar was out of service (no tables or chairs).
* The pool was OK but I never see any service there. The loungers were not clean, and needed repaint
* The gym was out of service, it looked as if someone was repairing but no progress or activity could be seen.
* The hotel has a shuttle to Patong or Phuket but at 400 BHT way/person it is cheaper to rent a taxi (if you find one :-)

The Hotel staff (friendly like always in Thailand) had a limited English and probably not enough training nor an active supervisor.

Try to avoid peak season price then you probably will pay for what you get

“What a dump!”

Had prebooked 4 nights in April, but my heart sank when I arrived.
Travelling on my own, the Layan offers loads of activities, which I was looking forward to delve into, but after only 2 hours on the premises, I had to get out and had arranged for a taxi to take me to Naithonburi Hotel the following day. First of all the Layan is really out in the sticks. Second, there is no easy access to the the beach or a swim in the big blue. The hotel is in serious need of maintenance and the whole place feels totally depressing. When I was showed my room there was dirty laundry and garbage outside my room, when checking out the following day it was still there and the cats, dogs and other creatures had ripped the garbage to shreads and it was strewned all over the place. It was quite obvious that the staff did not care about service and showing the hotel from its best. The place reaked of neglect, as an example I noticed that the info. board in the reception had details of a BBQ night dated 26th March 2003! I could really go on and on about this place and as the previous review mentioned it is not even a cheap place. I would really not recommend this place to anyone as, not even for 4 days or a good price. Phuket has so many gorgeous beaches and hotels, and there is no reason for anyone to spoil their holiday by staying at this place. Really not worth it!! I would alternatively highly recommend the Naithonburi Hotel a little north from Layan.

“Just about passed muster”

Was looking for somewhere to stay with my wife for 3 days. It was close to airport which was a bonus after the flights from UK. Overall, this was a very quiet resort (only 30% occupied) which allowed us to have the pool/restaurant/spa to ourselves. Excellent for winding down and a beautiful location. Negatives were: no easy access to a swimming beach as the tide went out 200+ meters; very bad for children due to lots of steps; fixtures and fittings require urgent attention; potentially lethal steps due to no maintenance; inability of staff to speak English/German/French; uninspiring cuisine. Make sure you get a discount on the list price as their rates were same as Mangosteen in the South but a fraction of the quality. If you get a good price and don't plan to stay more than 4 days, you will have a great time.

“Dreadful service”

Myself and my girlfriend plus a friend stayed here after a delightful 4 day liveaboard diving trip in the Similan Islands...and what a come down we had! The facilities and layout of the hotel are quite nice but the staff and the service were some of the worst I have ever experienced..and I have worked 20 years in the travel trade and know my hotels.

We wanted to spend our money in Phuket and do our humble small part in helping them recover from the Tsunami a year previously but sadly they tried our patience to the limit. I don't know if maybe they lost all of their good staff in the downturn in business after the Tsunami but they all appeared to be in the 15-18 years old age bracket, spoke little or no English and basically had'nt a clue about service.

The bar was closed up and all we had a choice of was beer or wine, ordering room service turned out to be a joke, ordering from the menu in the restaraunt frequentley had to be third or fourth choice meals as inexplicably they seemed to be out of this, that and the other. We did feel sorry for the staff as they were trying to do their best but you could also see they were obviously not trained properley, could not converse with or understand us half of the time and were patently out of their depth. Even checking out was a nightmare with their total incompetence in organising a transfer to the airport for us almost resulting in us missing our flight. We are in the process of sending a compaint to the hotel and shall advise what they say but all in all I would advise steering well clear of this hotel until such a time as they improve their staff situation.

“Get away from it all in Phuket”

Stayed here for seven nights while travelling alone around Thailand in January 2004 and would definitely recommend if you want to relax and chill out away from the busy touristy areas. Lovely pool, although on the few occasions it became busy with children I took a gentle stroll down to the beach, and it seemed I usually had the whole beach to myself.
Made frequent use of the spa which is just across the road from the hotel. It has a wide range of treatments available and the most fantastic spa therapy pool, had a wonderful thai massage in an open sided pavillion overlooking the sea.
The food and service were spot on, nothing was too much trouble for the staff, with a menu offering enough choice to be able to try something different every day.
Do be aware the hotel is built on a hillside so wherever you go within the hotel it usually involves climbing or descending lots of steps e.g. room to reception, room to restaurant, pool to bar, room to spa and beach.
Would recommend this hotel to other solo female travellers.
