I generally like to put a fair and positive spin on my reviews and so when I am looking for a place to stay I use Trip Advisor as I find reviews to be generally unbiased and have not been disappointed previously, but there is always a first time. My wife and I decided to spend New Year in Bangkok (reported already posted on Park Plaza, BKK) and a few days in Patong. We made our reservation at the Patong Paragon Resort & Spa, as the reports were positive and the photos looked good; as did the location.
The location was good, not too close to all the hustle and bustle of Bangla Road and the adjoining Sois but also less than a fifteen minute walk should you wish to be in 'party central' that is Bangla Road. Also the location is less than a minute's walk to the famous Patong Beach and the local roadside restaurants (opposite the beach), where not only is the food fantastic but the price is dirt cheap; over 20 bar-b-qued shrimps for Bht300.
The hotel infrastructure and rooms are very good, though the rooms are now in need of refurbishment. Large bathrooms in the rooms with a sunken bath next to a hole with shutters looking into the bedroom, a walk in shower, toilet and wash basin and depending on what room you stay in a very important feature (for my wife anyway) a built in dressing table, with a mirror, hairdryer and power sockets for you to connect your own hairdryer. We stopped in two rooms during our 6 night stay at the hotel (more about why later); the first room, 211, had a dressing table in the main bedroom and the second one, 404, had it in the bathroom. A large bed that was wider than it was long; it looked like two double beds pulled together. All rooms have a balcony and if you have a room that looks over the pool area it is really lovely; other rooms look over the hotel! There is an in-room safe and a quaint sitting area with cushions on a wood floor. Rooms are well presented and the chambermaid was prompt everyday in making the room up.
Overall the staff are very pleasant, especially housekeeping and the Bell Boys (when they are at their desk). As been reported the complimentary welcome fruit juice is nice as is the 1KG fresh fruit and the 15% discount off food, though we did not use the latter.
My wife suffers from Asthma and when we made our reservation we specifically asked for a 'non-smoking' room, as I always request at any hotel I stay at. This was confirmed but when we arrive on 2 Jan we were advised that we had been allocated a 'smoking' room and that there were no 'non smoking' rooms available for the duration of our stay. After a protracted discussion with the reception staff, during which time I asked to see the General Manager and/or the Duty Manager but was informed that there was nobody on duty, I spoke with the Senior Receptionist who said she could do nothing. After about an hour she offered us a 'no smoking' room the following day and as time was getting late we decided to take the smoking room for one night (Room 211). The following morning we changed rooms to 404 (no smoking) and as we unpacked found dead cigarettes in ashtrays on the balcony and in the room (this though was not the hotel's fault but the selfish guest who had been the room the night before)!
The following day we went to the collect a couple of towels from the pool boy who at 10am informed us all the towels ha gone and there maybe some in two hours, though the pool area was nearly empty as was the gym; so we informed him that we would be taking our towels from our room so we could sunbathe, this happened on two more occasions during our stay. The pool area itself is really nice and well laid out with a nice pool bar.
I like running and on my second night ran the length of Patong beach and back again, on arriving back at the hotel I went into the gym to grab a bottle of water only to be informed that gym does not have water and I must go to the coffee shop. I was sweating and tired after my run so it was easier to continue back to my room; again anytime I went for a run or used the gym there was never any water available which I find strange for a hotel such as this. They advertise the hotel as a 'spa' but in the six nights we spent there we never saw the spa open once, and this is supposed to be high season!
Though I requested to see the GM on four occasions to discuss my observations, either he was not given the message or decided not to meet a paying guest! Overall we were very disappointed with the hotel and though we will b going to Patong again we will definitely not be straying at the Patong Paragon Hotel & Spa.
Room Tip: Request a pool facing room, or even better a ground floor room which leads straight into the pool
