“Great Guesthouse- Amazing food”

This was our first stop on the Mai Hong Sorn loop (we decided not to stay in Pai as it had grown out of all recognition form our last visit 10 years ago. Sopong is MUCH quieter and a great place to stop for the hiking, caves and local markets. The River Inn is in a quiet location on thw outskirts of town. There are a wide variety of rooms in different price ranges (something for every one. Rooms are comfortable and well furnished. What sets this place above other similar places we have stayed is teh hospitality shown by Joy and family. they really cant do enough to make you feel at home. A highlight was the food which really was superb. I would highly recommend this as a place to stay if driving/riding the MHS loop.

“Great spot to stay whilst visiting nearby villages”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

The hotel is located in a beautiful spot, the rooms have great character and unlike most We've stayed in, which was great. The owner was very friendly and helpful, she suggested on arrival that we go quickly to Mae Lena, a nearby village ( as we told her we wanted to see minority people). It turned out to be a highlight of the trip for us.
The food was authentic Thai and at a very good price.
Would have no problem recommending this place

Thank you so much for your nice words. I'm glad we were able to find out about the special hilltribe gathering over in Mae Lanna the day you were here so we could let you know about it. And of course, it always nice to know that you enjoyed our food at the cafe as well. Thanks for staying with us and we hope to have a chance to see you again in Soppong.

“Lovely riverside inn away from the tourist scene”

We loved every aspect of the Soppong River Inn. We stayed in one of the new rooms (the upstairs "nest") which was quite modern and luxurious. The owners and their daughter were very friendly and helpful. The hiking and caving in the area are phenomenal; we also enjoyed the local market.

“Om lovely but rooms claustrophobic.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2011

We were very much looking forward to our stay at Soppong River Inn and had corresponded with Burt extensively however when we finally arrived only Om, his step daughter was there, (as Burt and Joy were away in Hawaii) and the place seemed almost abandoned. The room we had booked was the The baan but when we looked at it, it seemed very small and the second bed too narrow for my two "farang" sized 8 and almost 4 year olds. The room was hot and dark and stuffy and as they were doing works nearby it there were power tools everywhere and it did not look enticing at all. I couldn't imagine my kids playing nearby. Om sensed my concern I think and showed us the Champa room which for some strange reason is the most expensive room in the place?? It was so small and moldy smelling that we only lasted 1 night as I could not sleep and there was no room for my kids to play in the room once the sofa was turned down for a bed and there was too much furniture in there for the size. We therefore had no privacy as we had to go out of the room on the shared balcony which was lovely but not always suitable for a family to mix with smokers etc...

It was very much a dissapointment as we had up till this time had lovely accomadation in Pai and Chiang Mai for similar prices and had plenty of space. Also, it is a long journey to Soppong you expect some kind of welcome when you arrive.

The food however, was the best in the town I think and Om was lovely to us and did not charge more than a night even though we left late the next day. She sort of seemed a bit perplexed by having been left in charge of the whole place and the restaurant and there was only 1 other guest that we were aware of..

Room Tip: No room suitable for a family with small children.

Naturally, we were very sorry to learn about your disappointment with your accommodation. Also, I'm sorry that we were not able to be there and work things out personally with you, but this is the one time of the year during our low season that we can get away for a brief holiday, and at the same time leaving Aom capably responsible for things.

We understand your frustation with trying to sleep both your 8 and 4 year old in a single bed, although our site does mention that The Baan contains one queen and one single bed. Had we known this was a problem during your stay, we most certainly could have provided linens for the sofa or else set up a futon for one of your sons. Perhaps we could have further clarified this during our many emails in working out your reservation. Also, our apologies for the power tools and work going on nearby, as we are constructing a new two-storey cottage during the current low season, and this should be finished and cleaned up within a week.

We were also sorry to hear that Champa was not pleasant for you. Being at the end of rainy season and in the middle of such dense tropical foliage, we usually switch on the aircon in Champa prior to arriving guests to make the air more pleasant. And yes, once the double sleeper sofa is folded out, there really is not much room for two boys to do much playing in the room. Champa is located next to our three level terrace over the river and it has lots of space, although as you mentioned, you would have had to share that space with the one other guest who was staying with us at the time.

Finally, we do appreciate your compliment regarding our café food, as we try very hard to provide freshly prepared food with our own recipes and quality ingredients. Also, thank you for your compliments to Aom and we will be sure to pass your kind words along. Complements such as those really make everything worthwhile. Finally, we will take your all your other comments constructively and seriously with the hope of making improvements and perhaps the opportunity to welcome you back again the future for a more pleasant stay.

“Fantastic location, great food and friendly atmosphere, we loved it!”

Soppong River Inn is in a fantastic location, literally hanging over the river, it is quite amazing It has a really friendly welcoming atmosphere. The rooms are very comfortable and a little quirky, but more than adequate. The beautiful owner Joy has gone to a lot of trouble to make people feel at home and at ease and she has succeeded.

The food is really good and very cheap. Joy had a good range of wine to serve with meals and some great cocktails as well. We loved the friendly chat and the casual layback feel of the place. Would thoroughly recommend it as a stopover for a few nights on way to Mae Hong Son. Very relaxing on the deck above the river.

Room Tip: Have a look at all the rooms - they are all different.
