“My own experience - an Australian travel agent”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

I have visited Pai on my personal trip during X'mas in December 2011. I got my booking confirmed by reservations team in Bangkok and fully paid before I left Australia. I know that from X'mas to New Year is the peak season, especially for the Northern part of Thailand as Pai is one of the tourist destinations for Thais. It won't be easy to find hotel on the spot.

On that day we got to Pai about 9.30pm, had dinner in the town city and by the time we got to the resort (4km out of the city centre) was 10.30pm. We were extremely tried from a long drive and looked forward to straight off to bed. Got to the resort, gave front desk staff a hotel voucher, he replied "we don't have your booking and all rooms are fully booked!!". Very unprofessional manner, imagine about 7 staff were staring at you and didn't know what to do. One of them made a phone call to their manager who was currently not in duty. She advised them to ask me to come to check out a room at her place (yes, her personal place) which located at the far end of this property, about 3 minutes drive away from the main part of the resort in the middle of nowhere. She offered us to stay at one of the room upstairs, otherwise she will make a booking at Krating-Pai resort for us instead. Krating-Pai resort is much closer to the town centre but it will be another 10-15minutes drive. Considering it was nearly 11pm and we were extremely tried. We decided have a night in that room and left early in the morning. Honestly, the room was nice and the house is next to Pai river; however, it is a personal room (not a spare room with someone else stuffs in bathroom and wardrobe). In the morning, we drove back to the resort area and had a quick breakfast (very basic selections). I had another chat with the hotel staff before we left and she advised that they had received a request from my reservations team but were waiting for reconfirmation (which is very weird). Anyway, I informed my Bangkok team, sent through a complaint and they finally offered a full refund for my booking (accepted it was their mistake).

Sadly, I am unable to say good thing about this property because I had no chance of using other services except their basic breakfast.

Make sure you reconfirm your booking beforehand!!

“Oasis in Pai”

This hotel is about 4km from the centre of Pai. It's set amongst the rice fields and has a beautiful pool. Quiet and clean, it's an idyllic retreat if you want to go and relax in the Pai valley.

“Even the landscape around is stunning the unsatisfactory service can't make the stay pleasurable.”

As in Pai you can get so much cheaper -nicer and closer to the centre as well- stays than at Phu Pai Art Resort, I expected something special and was quite disappointed as soon as I got there; the staff is only able to speak a few prepared sentences in english, therefor not able to answer questions ('nocannot') or react to concerns, there is NO internet in the Resort and as the place is way out of the Village (about 10min.by car, you need a lift every time you want to go to Pai) you can't get any connections. the whole Resort seems to fall apart and is not well taken care of; the swimming pool furniture is rotten and super dirty, there are no sunshades, my room door was split into two halves, etc. The breakfast buffet was gone at 9.30 even they tell you the buffet is open till 10am and was also very poor with some fluffy toasts, jam, unripe fruits and cold fried eggs and some incredibly sweet cane juice.
As they advertise to offer horse riding, I thought on my second day I will give them a last chance before I leave and will try out the horse riding, one of the reason why I came there (on the website it looks quit professional). But as it showed up, that was the top of the letdowns; the ponies (NO horses!!) -to be exact THREE ponies- are the height of about a meter and in a bad shape, the guide couldn't speak ANY word in english and he wasn't able at all to control HIS pony, which wouldn't want to walk forward (only back) that in the end I led him (!!), the tour was one way for and back and only in step pace and the ponies are not trained at all, so they kicked and bit all the time. I think it is quite dangerous what they do, if I picture some people could send their kids to ride the ponies.
Therefor I left on my second day against my booking of a week and they didn't (couldn't??) ask why. So I definitely can't recommend that place at all and as I saw a few places around here by now, you can find something with the same gorgeous view to treat yourself better and don't waste the money in this bad ART? hotel.

“True Pai experience in the middle of nowhere.........but”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2010

We have been going to Pai since 2001. It is a different place today. We have stayed at Bella Villa, the Quarter and have checked out many places. This is the place to stay if you want to be able to feel like you are in the middle of nowhere/rice paddies. BUT. The english of the staff is quite poor so I don't know if it is a lack of communication or just poor service. Toiletries are quite bad and watered town. Mini fridge in room. The views are spectacular and the villas great. Mosquito nets are provide with AC in the Villas. CNN available on TV for us. We were walk-in guests after deciding to leave the Quarter. They quoted a high price for low season. The only way to book this place is through a travel agent for the best price. Off-season makes the Honeymoon suite, a free standing hut a steal of a deal. 89us dollars in the fall of 2008. The reason we enjoyed this place and I think the only way to enjoy it is if you are brave enough to get a Moped/scooter in town and travel back and forth. about a 10min ride into town.

Infinity pool was fantastic! Breakfast was poor, but all hotel breakfasts in Pai are terrible so go to one of the restaurants in town. Wawee coffee house on the farside of town is excellent coffee with free internet. Love of Coffee just outside of town has great cakes and coffee with views out of this world! Moped is best in Pai!

“Phu Pai Art Resort : Right in the middle of yellow field”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 May 2009

Phu Pai Art Resort is 4 Kms from town. Bungalow chalet is decorate with dark wood and concrete floor and locate among yellow fields. Bathroom is spacious with a bath tub and shower area and painted in yellow and orange brick color. Shower gel and Shampoo is in refillable container. The window panel is badly designed and leave a big gap between windows that one can easily put fingers in between and mosquitos can come in to visit you while you were sleeping. For comfort, there's TV with 5 channels and all are in Thai, minibar fridge, electronic pot and hair dryer provided. There's a swimming pool but closed due to the rain. Staff said that the rain caused high in Chlorine and not safe to swim. Overall experience with this resort is disappointing due to its location and minimum service provide, feels like someone let you stay at their house, so you got to serve yourself.
