“A magical little hidden gem amongst the trees.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

Upon arriving to this breathtaking, hidden gem amongst the trees, we learnt that this resort typically caters to Thai guests, but I must say, it was above and beyond our western expectations... It was truely magical! The villas are natural with a lot of wood used in the furnishings and building. The beautiful 'outdoor' feeling shower and bathroom complimented the ambience perfectly (if you don't mind a spider or two in amongst the rocks)! Wynn the English speaking Thai on reception was worth his weight in gold. As I mentioned, this resort typically caters to Thai guests and therefore their menu is quite limited in meal options, but in saying that Wynn happily took our meal requests an had the staff buy the neccessary ingredients so the chef could prepare them for us the next day!!! Now who could complain about that?!! The resort setting its self is nothing short of heavenly, with thick, lush, green jungle, a cliff view overlooking the river and a waterfall and many hidden treasures amonst the trails, like the WWII Japanese Oven near the inviting natural mineral pool on the grounds. Just spectacular! It is a little way from Kanchanaburi however (about an hours drive) so hiring a car is strongly recommended, but if you'd prefer the resort offers many tours to nearby attractions at very reasonable prices. A real slice of heaven!

Room Tip: We stayed in the waterfalls 5 villa (1QB & 1SB studio with private outdoor lounge and verandah...

“A delightful and nourishing natural setting"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 April 2011

We planned our own travels through South East Asia, and felt so delighted with our choice of Mom Chailai. It was my husband's birthday on the day we arrived, and I was proud and happy of the choice I had made for my nature-loving husband. The setting is astoundingly beautiful, with stands of bamboo, unusual varieties of palms, and wood and boulder sculptures interspersed around the grounds in an aesthetically pleasing manner. We felt personally supported by the entire staff. and when we left, felt we left friends...the manager who personally cared for us and helped us by taking us on our excursions, to the kitchen staff who made every meal with tasteful typical choices. We loved our lodging, with its well air-conditioned bedroom with beautiful wood sculptures for bedstand and table, and the bath which included a shower with natural plants and trees. The mineral fed pool and fish spa were so soothing, since we chose to travel in late February, and the days were warm. This place has been planned, seeded, and groomed by Mom Chailai from the days of her childhood. We had the privilege of meeting her and her spouse who spent a night there with us. The vision of this woman from long ago is beautifully realized in this retreat setting. It is about 60 km north of Kanchanaburi, so one has to take a "taxi" truck to get there, but there is also a bus. Within reach of other beautiful natural wonders, such as the Erewan Waterfalls, we enjoyed both staying in retreat in the resort above the river, and spending a day in town exploring the history of the Bridge of the River Kwai. We smile to remember our delight of these days in Thailand, so different than the city centers we also enjoyed which had totally different offerings to these travelors from Chicagoland..

“Sawadee - ... so earthy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2011

We have just returned from our wonderful trip to Thailand. The highlight of our trip was outspokenly the area of Kachanaburi in the Monchailai Forest Retreat. Arriving at the property was like entering into an amazingly beautiful forest, a huge jungle with bamboo trees all over the place. The only sounds capturing your ears are coming from birds and the cracking of the trees. If you are searching for relaxation and becoming one with the nature, this is without any doubt the place to be. Located on the riverside, you can walk down through a small path or you could enjoy the natural spring water swimming pool. The breakfast was delicious and the service very friendly, although body language was more the case than spoken English. The rooms are beautifully designed with wood works, very clean and neat and a bathroom every woman can dream of. The area is rich in things to visit from waterfalls to elephant ridings, rafting on the river or a visit to the Tiger Temple.
We also had the opportunity meeting the owner; who spends a lot of time with his guests and really cares about making his guests satisfied.
One thing we would recommend future visitors is to hire a car once arriving in Kachanaburi, as taxi’s charge a lot for the one-hour ride and you will definitely need it as busses & trains stop at 5 pm and in the area they do not have the rental service.
After our stay in Monchailai Forest Retreat, we also tried Monchailai River retreat which was another unique experience; both properties in a very different style. From the jungle to the boathouse. We highly recommend both properties, only make sure you organize own transportation, as otherwise you will be walking a lot and loosing beside the kilo’s also the opportunities of visiting the area.

“Pieceful getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 May 2009

This place was amazing!
Initially i was a little unsure as when our Bangkok taxi driver took us down the little dirt road to the retreat, he started to tell us it looked dangerous and was too close to Burma. In fact, he was clearly a city man and didn't have a clue.
The retreat is miles from Burma, perfectly safe and near enough (but far enough away) to other resorts that you are not completely isolated.
The staff were incredible and attentive at all times and the front of house manager, Win, spoke amazing English. He arranged all our tours and took us out on every one himself. He was well informed about each place we visited and every recommendation he made was excellent. He even haggled on ticket prices on our behalf without us asking! The highlights were the hot spring and fish spa across the river, hellfire pass and the many waterfalls in Kanchanburi.
The resort itself was everything i'd hoped. Quiet, relaxing and secluded. The food was great and being a vegetarian they cooked off menu for us every meal time to ensure we had variety. The room was beautiful furnished with handcrafted wooden furniture and the bed was very comfortable. This was the perfect getaway!

“Good but.....”

The room was clean. The staff were nice. However, this hotel lacked a wow factor. We were allocated a mountain view room. There was no mountain view due to the tall trees growing directly in front of our room. Even from the main area it was difficult to view the spectacular river. The garden seemed overgrown and was not up to its potential. There were many steps to get to this room. The bed was hard. There was pleasant enchanting music playing throughout the forest when we arrived but at night this turned into unharmonious western music which made it difficult to get an early nights sleep. The airconditioning was good but it may have also been responsible for the excruciating noise possibly made by the compressor that woke us up early in the morning. I wanted this hotel to be so good but sadly this hotel was lacking in many areas.
