“Make sure you pick the right place, it is a bit isolated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2010

I picked the Pung-Waan Resort & Spa from the internet and sent through an Email booking request.
And I think here lies the problem, the emails go to a central booking office in Bangkok, and there are 2 Pung-Waan Resorts in the Kanchanaburi area, one is located only a short distance from the River Kwai bridge and the other is 60 km’s away, both appear to run by the same company.
I sent an Email requesting a room at the one close to the Bridge and received a confirmation saying I had a booking.
Now I am not exactly sure if I may have asked for the wrong hotel address or they booked us into the wrong place but when we arrived from Bangkok at what I thought was the correct place (at Midnight) there was great confusion as it appeared we were booked at the other place 60km’s away, this was not helped by the fact that the guy on the desk doing the night shift did not speak a word of English.
In the end they agreed to let us have a room there for the night and we could sort it out in the morning when the normal reception staffs were in.

As it turned out it the place was a few Km’s further from the Bridge than I thought (It looked very close on their internet map) and we were disappointed with the rooms which needed renovation and didn’t really like the isolated location, if you stay here you must have a car or you are stranded.

The next morning we decided to change hotels and not knowing the area I pulled out the trusty Lonely Planet looking for options, I just picked Ploy Guest House at random as it seemed to be close to the river and down town Kanchanaburi. (See my review on Ploy Guest House)

The good outcome I guess is that they only charged me for the 1 night we stayed and I was able to cancel the other days without penalty.

If you are after a resort style place away from all the hustle and bustle of down town and want that remote isolated and quiet location them maybe this will suit some people, but at the advertised rates (1500 Baht per night) I think it is a little expensive considering the place is a bit run down and the rooms need a makeover.

If you make a booking be very specific about which place you want a room as having 2 places with basically the same name is very confusing, they need to better indentify the places on their web site and that 2 separate Email addresses for booking to help reduce the confusion.

“Get.A.Car.If.You.Are.Coming.Here.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2010

I cannot mention this enough. If you are coming to Pung Wan Resort in Sai Yok Kanchanaburi independently, please do hire a car from Kanchanaburi or a driver. While they will pick you up from the train station, the resort is about 3km from the main road and is full of uphills without much shade. I know this as walking was what we had to resort to after coming back from a day out.

The signs to the place are terrible (faded and very discreet) and you will not be able to move arond Sai Yok to any places of interest, or in fact any place outside Pung Wan resort without paying through your nose. For example, for 3 pax to travel about 9km away to the River Kwai Village Hotel (for an event) they wanted to charge us close to THB 1000.

I did enjoy the river views I got in Room 128 athough the rest of the rooms were just average. Nothing overly spectacular or memorable about the hotel. The waitresses in the restaurant spoke English to enable us to communicate as per the reception. The food in the restaurant was average. In fact, everythng in the hotel is average.

Its fine for an overnight stay - just ensure you have transport or be willing to walk in the hot hot Thai sun.

“Nice Quiet Hotel - A little out of the way”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2009

We stumbled upon Pund-Waan quite by accident - It is a little out of town and you might need private transport - we had a hire car so it suited us and we used it as a base for day trips to Hellfire Pass and the district - the resort is pretty typical of asian up market places - 3+ star - The rooms were spacious and clean - was quite time whilst we were there - appears that most guests are on package tours - arrive by bus in evening and gone again next morning - the pool was relaxing - meals were OK but nothing special - staff somewhat distant as may be expected in a larger hotel - We would go back but might have a bit of a look around first - Had no problems with security as there is a guarded entry gate - grounds and facilities would suit a family

“Beautiful resort, terrible staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2009

We stayed in this beautiful resort for one night during our roundtrip through Thailand. Tired after a long busride and desperate for a cooldown, we got ourselves in the pool only minutes after arrival. Later that evening we noticed 2000 baht missing from our wallets, someone having access to our rooms (which were locked at the time) stole a total of 4000 THB and sought through several suitcases while we were relaxing in the pool. After notifying the staff, the general manager of the resort was contacted, but did not believe the story and refused to investigate the matter among his personnel, so the police was notified. Only the morning after the forensic investigation took place in the middle of the night, the assistant manager offered us to return the money someone, most probably among their own staff, took from our wallets.

The resort itself is beautiful with the river Kwae running right along it. Breakfast was good and the drinks affordable. Shame this incident ruined our experience at this place.

I am writing this review so that anyone reading this is aware of the possibility that this resort has one or more staffmembers among its personnel taking advantage of people only staying in the resort for a short period of time. Stealing a portion of the amount of money in wallets, only hoping that you find out the next day while you are on the move again.
