“Disappointing - bathroom grubby and trips chaotic”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 March 2011

Great location. We had a raft room, which had great views but the bathroom needed modernisation and a good clean. Food was generally disappointing, particularly the buffet dinner. What we were most disappointed with, though was the trips - what we had booked was changed beyond all recognition as we were bundled on and off minibuses to join other trips rather than having our own itinerary, despite having booked one of their standard packages. We were told what we would do on a particular day and then found we were off somewhere else instead. The trip along the Kwai in a long-tailed boat to see a trestle bridge disappeared altogether and when we queried it we were told we'd had a ride on the train instead. We were not consulted/advised in advance and due to their disclaimer felt we had no comeback.

There was insufficient time at the Hellfire Pass museum and way too little at the River Kwai museum and cemetary, although we had stopped at a petrol station (with a horrible toilet) for 20 minutes only 30 km before arriving at the museum (where we could have used their clean, European toilet) and had to rush to try to prioritise what we saw once there. We had a voucher for a tea or coffee at the museum coffee shop but there was no time to use it as we were then rushed off to the bridge over the River Kwai and left for 75 minutes to browse the touristy shops and use the facilities at the nasty restaurant alongside the bridge before being driven to meet the above train.

There is undoubtedly a lot to see and do locally but the emphasis is all on filling the minibuses to cut costs by fitting in with other trips rather than enabling guests to make the most of their time at the fascinating attractions. Had we realised that this meant the highlightsof our 3 day trip would be squeezed into 1.5 days we would have only stayed for one night. We filled the empty afternoon with a visit to the nearby hot spring spa (at additional cost), which was very enjoyable, but then had to be up early for the additional visit we had arranged to the lava cave, which lasted only 1.5 hours, so we then had 2 hours before check out time and 4 hours to wait before being loaded onto a very cramped minibus (to fit in with the itinerary of a separate 1 day trip) in order to get back to Bangkok.

Despite our high expectations this was definitely the low point in an otherwise wonderful trip to Thailand and Cambodia. We would much have preferred a private tour to the "cattle truck" approach we endured and would have been happy to pay the difference.

My advice? If you go here, get confirmation before travelling of your actual itinerary and make it clear that, unusual circumstances excepting, this is what you expect and try to negotiate a price for a private package.

“the view from the room was breathtaking!”

we stayed here for 1 night on a tour and fell in love with this hotel. we had a river wing room and when walking into the room, tired after a long days sightseeing, we were astounded by the tranquility and beauty. we had lunch, dinner and breakfast and found the food to be good. the staff were very friendly and helpful. the location is very isolated but we thought this added to the appeal of the place.

“Very pleasant stay, really enjoyed it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2011

We were at the Resort over New Year, and it was a wonderful break, and the staff very friendly. We had Raft rooms, and these were very nice until 2nd January when the hotel filled up with buses of package holiday makers from eastern europe who treated everyone including the staff with such disrespect. The noise after their arrival was horrible, and the staff stretched to the limit. The wait staff in particular did an amazing job trying to please everyone.

Prior to this we had enjoyable meals, Thai food aplenty including breakfast, but once it was full of package holidaymakers the standard inevitably fell.

Having said this the massage was excellent, the off ATV rides enjoyable, Fish Spa good value, and staff quite helpful. Pool area was excellent. Quite isolated if you don't have transport, but we knew this before we went. Some parts of the hotel and grounds a getting a bit tired, and our shower had virtually no hot water, but again, it wasn't a big thing as it was Thailand and very warm! Our room was great, with balcony river on the Kwai Noi.

“Nice but isolated”

We stayed at the River Kwai Village hotel for 2 nights as part of a package to see the Death Railway & the Tiger Temple. The hotel was quite nice with well laid out rooms and pools on the banks of the River Kwai and the staff were very helpful. My only problem with the hotel was the food which I thought was very bland with a poor selection for the evening meals. Our meals were included as part of the package but the choice of meals was very limited and seemed to be buffet on the cheap. There was no alternative because of the location,so had to make do with what was on offer. The plus side of the hotel is a facility they have called Dr.Fish spa/massage centre a few miles up the river which was very relaxing. They had herbal baths/pools,mineral pools, fish pedicure and spa/massage treatments which were very good and reasonably price(450 baht). The hotel was clean and tidy and a good base for our main reason for staying, the river Kwai bridge & Tiger Temple.

“Naturally Amazing”

This place is amazing. It is located about an hour and a half from Kanchanaburi. There new hot springs are amazing and state of the art. The pools are very nice and gardens well groomed. The only negative would be the food. It is a bit pricey and the pasta sauce came straight from a can!
