“Bad experience with the travel agency”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We didn't sleep at the hotel, but we booked a tour from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang in Laos by slow boat with their travel agency. The trip in itself was ok, but we were very upset when we crossed the border and where asked to give 1300 bath for the visa (40 USD), instead of the usual 31USD. The lady told us that it was for an express visa (and that if we didn't pay we would miss the boat). It was absolutly false : when we arrived at the lao immigration, nothing has been done and we made the queue like everybody and we got the visa in 15 minutes, so we paid the 9USD extra for nothing (and the lady was obviously gone when we discovered that). We were not alone : there were 10 people like us. So be careful if you travel with them and refuse to pay the extra fee for epress visa!
PS : to make it worse they didn't accept USD but only bath, so we had to withdraw bath in Chiang Kong (and when we arrived at the immigration they take USD)...

“Good for the Price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 December 2011

For 500THB, the equivalent of £5 each for the night I thought the Golden Triangle Inn was good value. Decent sized rooms, clean, mosquito screens, you can't ask for much more at that price! We found the management quite chirpy, contrary to previous reviews, and the setting is nice, nestled amongst the tropical trees. Also the location is exactly where you want to be in, right in the centre of the town just a two minute walk from the Chiang Rai Night Market.

The downside is that it is very noisy. The man in the room next door blew his nose at five minute intervals for a few hours and we were treated to each 'honk' at full volume. If you take ear-plugs and are looking for a decent room on a budget then I would recommend it.

Room Tip: See if they have anything available away from the road. The walls are very thin and the traffic is l...

“Run Down, Dirty but good location”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

The room was quite cheap (500BHT) and is very well located, really close to the city centre - 5 min walk to the night market.
The owner is lovely and will try to help as much as he can.
However, the rooms are filthy, the sheets are grey/brown from being old, there are dead mosquito stains on the walls and our bathtub had tens of dead insects/spiders in it when we arrived. We asked for the bathroom to be cleaned, which it was but the tub has yellow stains from letting dirty water (or else) evaporate. It is really not engaging. We slept well but the dirtiness of the place made us feel very uncomfortable. We had booked for 2 nights but only stayed one, deciding it was not worth it and preferring to spend a little bit more to get in a decent place.
I would not go back.

“Not as good as it should be in this price range”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2009

The Rydges chain in Australia is known for buying up hotels in good locations but a bit long in the tooth, charging competitive rates, but milking the value of the hotel by minimizing repair and improvement, driving into the ground.

Golden Triangle Inn appears to be using the same strategy to make money.

The room is adequate in size and facilities, but floor not recently washed or dusted. The location is good - not far from the night market and bus station.

No desk in the room. No Internet, at first, but then they installed a router the morning of my departure. Room cleanliness inadequate, especially bathroom. Very worn furniture and fixtures. Cheap, inadequate free breakfast.

The first room I was offered, a few of the lights did not work. Very few outlets may explain it - previous guest may have unplugged the lamps to recharge his/her devices.

A big cockroach chose the bathroom floor, an obvious spot near the toilet, as his final resting place. The hotel has apparently decided to respect his final wish, as he is still there.

The nearby toilet has not been scrubbed recently - not filthy, but a grime line is visible when you flush. Water pressure for shower only marginally better than the inadequate showers in Luang Nam Tha, Laos.

I think housekeeping does no more than change the towels and linens.

I paid 650 baht/night. Inexpensive, but Chiang Rai should be a lot less expensive than Bangkok. Rough Guide 2007 says that hotels in CR tend to be overpriced for what they deliver, and this hotel is a case in point.

The CR Mall, across the street, did have free wifi (no code) and the signal did reach the hotel restaurant (which was totally empty in the evening, despite being open), or you could use it from a comfortable bench outside of the mall.

“Centrally located, well priced hotel”

I found the management here indifferent, the rooms over two levels were quite spread out, with a garden of sorts, but it was when my neighbours arrived in the room next door, that I realised how noisy it was. Luckily they had an early night, so bring earplugs. For the price and location, with a light breakfast included, it was adequate. The bus station, Wats, and restaurants are all very close by. A good middle range choice, with lots of inexpensive or more expensive options, but little in this price range.
