I struggled a bit to give this hotel a rating. My stay was probably a 2, but the hotel is probably worthy of a 4, so I split the difference. I stayed here three nights with my girlfriend (so no family), and while the hotel was very nice, my stay was marred by the weddings that were going on around the resort (and I did see the warnings on the hotel website ahead of time, just didn't think it would be as bad as it was). I would definitely recommend this hotel for families and for couples who go to bed by 9pm or 10pm.
Let me start off with the positives...
1. The room was very nice and we had access to the pool directly from the patio (lagoon access room). It was worth the extra $30 for this room if you plan to use the pool a lot as more of a novelty than anything. The grounds outside were very well maintained.
2. Every meal that we had here was superb. We ate at most of the restaurants during our stay and everything tasted great and was served fresh. They also did fairly well on timing of meal delivery (if you have been to Asia before, you know what I am talking about). We only had one miscommunication on which glass of sparkling wine I ordered (Chandon vs. Chandon Moet), but other than that, things were flawless including the breakfast and dinner buffets we ate.
3. Great presentation of cake for my girlfriend's birthday... it made both of our stays and was a great sendoff the last night we were there.
4. The pool is great, there are many trees providing shade throughout. It is one big circle around the inside of the resort.
5. This resort seems more geared towards families... they have a kids play center (no kids, so not sure what is offered).
6. The ping pong table near the market, helped cure some of our boredom at times.
7. The Internet was relatively fast.
8. The beds and pillows were very comfortable.
9. Staff was very friendly, English speaking abilities varied.
And now on to the not so good...
1. By far, the worst part of the stay was on Saturday when for 5 1/2 hours from sound check to completion of a wedding party, Indian music was blasted outside my room. I was trying to get work done, and it was impossible to concentrate in the room or anywhere I could find at the hotel. It was like I was Manuel Noriega hiding in the Vatican Embassy with the military trying to get me out by blasting loud music outside (or as if I was in a Hard Rock Cafe for way longer than an hour or two for dinner). I did take several videos of it to record the sound, but unfortunately Trip Advisor does not allow videos. Usually, I want everyone to have fun and enjoy their wedding, but at this Sheraton, you are pretty much trapped because there is no place to go within walking distance. You could hear the music throughout the hotel. I asked for another room, but there was only one not too far away from mine available. I even considered moving to another hotel, but my girlfriend wanted to stay.
2. Noise from a wedding at the beachfront overpowered the small band playing at the Italian restaurant on Sunday night, but luckily we did not hear too much of it in the room (our room was several building away from the beach). Not a big deal, but after the day before, I can say that when the hotel provides a warning that there might be some noise from private events, expect the worse... I WOULD NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL WHEN THERE ARE SPECIAL EVENTS. During the events, setup and take down, many walkways throughout the hotel were blocked by equipment, including at one point on Sunday, both walkways to the beach.
3. The Club Lounge was closed during our stay (likely because 100 of the 228 rooms were booked for the wedding), although they did offer afternoon tea and evening cocktails at different restaurants each day throughout the property. It was a bit disappointing because I usually like the lounges as somewhere to work a bit and also relax.
4. The pool closes at 7pm and there is not much else to do besides eat at night.
5. After 10pm, most everything is closed and there is nothing to do, so plan on getting to bed by then.
6. And to further my last point, there are NO english speaking movie channels on the TV, as this hotel is intent on getting you to pay $15 to $20 for movies through their pay per view system. No HBO, Cinemax, Star Movies, etc. It can get very boring in the room.
7. The Internet continued to require logins several times throughout the day on the same device.
8. The towels were rough and the soap/shampoo that Sheratons use (not this locations fault) do not compare to what Hilton offers.
9. Walking to the beach is easy (not much beach directly in front of the hotel), but there is a lot of trash on the beach.
Again, I would recommend this hotel for families and couples that go to bed by 9pm or 10pm, so long as there are not any special events at the location. For my stay, I thought that I overpaid for what I got due to all of the special events and the disruptions that they caused.
