If you are not expecting high-end, perfectly clean place, this should be acceptable. A bit of nuisance is that you may find it not particularly well-maintained in some parts (bathroom etc.) You can buy WIFI connection for 24 hours at 100bahts at the reception and it works alright. Apparently various types of massage that they are offering are pretty good for the value. Tok tok pickups are always outside, but if you get out to the main street and and stop the ones transporting local customers, you get by with 20 bahts.

An average Thai town hotel in the middle of Surat Thani Town. Nothing special but in good shape and helpful staff; some speak English as well, so you can get help and advices where to go and what to see. Breakfast is satisfying; we didn’t try the pool or the sauna. Parking in front is free, internet is not free. Rooms on the higher floors offer good view to the city.

Very large rooms for the price. The 'better' higher up rooms with a river view are smaller than the lower floor rooms looking over the pool, initially I was going to get one of the upper floor rooms but they were booked out so I took larger lower floor room .... I was ver happy with it adequate bathroom, and a separate step down lounge area with oversize refrigerator.

The breakfast was hearty and the omelette chef delivered a great omelette with a wide grin.
The reception staff were very helpful especially Mr Kasem (not sure of the spelling) who was very helpful with directions and advice when I needed to go to hospital for a blood infection.
By the way the Taksin Hospital is the one to go to if you should need to. Fantastic modern small hospital I was put on a drip three evenings in a row and given a course of oral antibiotics which fixed me up .... for 900baht !!. ... anyway I digress
I was going to stay only two nights but I really liked the hotel as a base camp for exploring the Surat area ... I hired a long boat twice to explore upstream and got some fantastic photos
I hired a car and driver and explored the out of the way coastline south of Surat ... fantastic I will return ....

The Wang Tai is a large hotel in Surat Thani, about 20minute walk from the town centre. It is clearly aimed at local Thai visitors and business travellers but is perfectly adequate for a short stay as Surat Thani is a major travel-hub for transport to the Gulf coast islands (Samui and Koh Pagnan) as well as trains and buses to Bangkok.

The price is brilliant, for about 30 US dollars, you simply wont get better and the hotel has decent sized, clean spacious rooms. The staff don't speak great english but thats to be expected in a provincial Thai city which is not an attraction for tourists, though saying that walking around the town centre in the evenings gives a a refreshingly pleasant insight into Thai life, with locals playing Takraw and tennis and stopping for a chat out of pure friendliness rather than a sales pitch.
