“Location excellent, hotel not”

Pros: beautiful endless clean quiet(ish) beach
Nice spa
Food generally pretty good. If you like real Thai food you need to ask for 'Thai spicy' dishes, otherwise you will get a watered down version
Cons:
Rooms tired, in need of a decent refurb and generally uninspiring. No real decor or character. Pool villas spacious, but that is really the only plus.
Service hit and miss: in the Baan Thai a la carte breakfast, complimentary for those staying in villas, service was excellent with keen, friendly and well trained polite staff. Again Baan Thai evening service very good.
Elsewhere in the hotel service is slow and substandard for a purported 5* hotel.
The beach and pool areas, but particularly the beach , are subject to a mass blocking of sunbeds every morning, with people putting towels out from 7.30, and not sometimes arriving until 11.30. That's a joke, and should not be tolerated by the hotel. You'd expect it in a benidorm 2*.
Cleanliness/hygiene: we have nagging doubts that something was amiss here; we chatted with probably 30 people during our stay. Of these perhaps 25 had had a stomach illness with pretty much identical symptoms. Furthermore so had several others they told us about. Coincidence? Perhaps, but that seems lot to us.

Overall, a little disappointed.

One final positive: our 'villa host' was a lady called Tippy. She was fantastic. Lovely engaging personality, and absolutely on top of her job.

I appreciate you taking the time to write a detailed account of your experience in our resort. I am of course happy to learn that we have left you with a positive impression especially in our Baan Thai Restaurant. As Thai food can be very spicy if it is cooked authentically, we appreciate if the guests tell us their preference. We will use your review to improve our resort further in those other areas where we could not yet meet your expectations. Rest assured that I will address these issues with my team.

Referring to your comment of the 25 guests suffered from stomach illness. We have a nurse service at the resort to assist customers that are feeling unwell 24 hours a day. Every day, management checks several times a day on the customers that were visiting the nurse for further assistance and the causes for their illness. We had 3 or 4 guests over a couple of days that were suffering from certain symptoms that could have various causes. Our Food Safety Committee investigates all allegations related to food immediately after we are notified. We have checked samples of cooked and raw food, as well as the methods and temperature of storage, preparation and service of food. The practices at our resort were all found to meet our normal high standards.

Please rest assure that our hotel has an international standard food safety program implemented based on the principles of HACCP to ensure a high food safety and hygiene level. This is reviewed annually to ensure we are up to date. Our hotel is also externally audited by a 3rd party food safety auditor on an unannounced basis to verify our food safety standards. All our food safety monitoring records were completed as per the requirements of our food safety program.

Thank you for highlighting the service of Khun Tippy, our villa host manager. I will pass on your compliments to her. Once again thank you for your valuable review and I sincerely hope that there will be another opportunity to welcoming you back again.

With kind regards

“Superb”

Simply one of the best hotels I ever stayed at.

We booked a package including airport transfer. You were greeted in the hotels arrival lounge at the airport and driven to the hotel which worked perfectly. The room was large and very well kept. We had a room overlooking the quiet spa pool. The beach is simply fabulous. Staff was extremely friendly and competent. We had a "romantic dinner" on the beach, which I can highly recommend. Even though we had quite a bit of rain the whole stay was just magical.

Room Tip: There are quite rooms suitable for couples as well as those close to the activity/children pool.

Dear TravelForFunAndWork,

Thank you very much for the high ratings of our resort. I appreciate your positive feedback and the fact that you highlighted the two separate wings of our resort, the Spa wing with the tranquillity area and the livelier Family wing that is located close to the Kid’s Club.

I do hope we have an opportunity to welcoming you back again soon

Kind regards

“Immaculate again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Although it has been a year since I visited this beautiful resort, fortunately nothing has changed! Every bit of my visit this january was as immaculate as the first visit was. Therefore I'm very disappointed about all the previous reviews here on tripadvisor. The majority of the complaints are about the distance to Khao Lak, which to me is absolutely not a problem! Only 5-10 minutes by car is not the end of the world people. If you want the seclusion which is offered by the resort, don't expect a lively scene around the corner.

Maybe it is for the best that not everybody likes this resort... This little gem must be kept a secret.

I'll be back next year!

Dear JanVUtrecht,

Thank you very much for your positive review and the high marks you have given us. I am happy to read about your positive experience and I fully agree with your opinion that we have a beautiful but secluded property located a little bit outside of Khao Lak town.

Thank you once again and we hope to have an opportunity to welcoming you back again soon.

Kind regards

“This is not a 5* hotel and not at all recommended”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

At the time of booking we agonised between this hotel and the Marriott and oh do I regret our decision - after 2 nights here we moved to The Marriott down the road - which is in an entirely different class, even though they are exactly the same price.

I hate reading winging reviews so I'll try and be as helpful as possible, because this hotel marred our holiday and the Marriott thankfully saved the day!

This place reminded me more of a large all inclusive 3* resort in Mexico or disneyland rather what you'd expect for 5* hotel in Thailand. In my view, this place is aimed at the mass family market and certainly more geared towards European/German guests.

The GOOD: Nice gardens/landscaping, pool area attractive.

The BAD: rooms are functional but nothing special, but when you look closely all fittings are cheap/nasty, much is damaged and has the general feel of a Travelodge trying to look upmarket. Very crowded everywhere so you have to be up at the crack of dawn to get a beach bed. Beach very disappointing, not enough sunbeds and all crowded together with screaming kids on top of you. Poor choice of local restaurants or anything else for that matter nearby. Reception area sloppy and lots of people eating chips and burgers and gives air of general untidiness/grubbiness.

THE UGLY: huge and sprawling unattractive concrete building, rooms can be long walk through grey concrete corridor. Poor quality, very worn and soggy bed linen, appalling bath towels, thin and threadbare, beach towels were stained and you have to exchange them each day with card system (which you'd expect in 3* not 5*) in case you pinch them I guess - personally I'd bin them! Altogether very poor service, unhappy and sulky staff and not representative of any other service we received whilst in Thailand. Dirty/grubby particularly by the pool and restaurant area - rubbish in big carts on open view to guests, very limited choice of Thai food - mostly European food on menus in the restaurants. The food we ate at beach restaurant was worse than plane food, it was like cardboard. Horrible, pointless and unsightly "zoo" - which is just some deer in an ugly pen area in the grounds. They have got some ludicrous system playing idiotic and patronizing animal/jungle sounds in the lifts and in the reception area. Unsightly area of crazy golf and other games areas to the side of hotel.

So ..... I'm sure that it'll come as no surprise that my recommendation is if you are looking for a relaxing peaceful and luxurious holiday - stay in the Marriott rather than this hotel!

Dear flufflett,

I am sorry to hear that our hotel did not meet your expectation at all and I am glad to read that you have found a suitable hotel for your stay in Khao Lak. Different guests prefer different products and different types of hotels. We also have customers that were moved from other resorts to our resort due to various reasons, as each hotel has it own unique character, ambience and service concept.

We always welcome guests’ feedbacks for us to learn, improve and understand our guests’ needs. I will certainly share and review your comments with my team and rectify the areas wherever necessary. Since years, Khao Lak has been a favorite holiday destination for many European markets, including Germany, Switzerland and Scandinavia. There is no particular aim towards particular markets, the customer has the choice what suits their preferences and budget the best.

Our hotel is designed with a dual concept for families and couples. We have a spa complex, which is peaceful, ideal for couples to relax and enjoy a quiet day. The spa complex is complete with our award winning spa, adult only spa pool with Jacuzzi, gym, 18 hole mini golf, archery, golf driving range and two tennis courts. Our family complex includes a large family pool with water slides, kids’ pool and a kid’s club. This is a perfect haven for families with young kids to enjoy a great fun day.

Teakwood materials are employed for the all guestroom furnishing and flooring and certainly it gets scratched and damaged from time to time. To address this issue, every year, the resort carries out an extensive soft refurbishment to refresh and repair our product and facilities to meet today’s guest’s needs. We are currently planning this maintenance program for the upcoming green season.

I have taken on board your comments on our bed linen and towels. We have just received 800 pieces of new bed linen and towels from the manufacturers this week.

As a little surprise I have noted your comment about the limited choice of Thai food, as our restaurant selection includes our Baan Thai restaurant with over 40 Thai dishes for selection. In addition our Bamboo Beach Grill includes a further 8 Thai dishes serving a more international menu.

The animal sound in the lift is the Le Meridien elevator sound track created by the award winning musicians & composer Henry Scars Struck for all Le Meridien hotels and resorts worldwide. There are 6 different sounds that rotate on a 6-hour time frame to identify different periods of the day to the guest. The entire experience is to RESET the guest’s mind.

We thank you once again for contributing your review on this platform.

Kind regards

“Amazing service and amazing staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

I am not a person who follows much on Travel Reviews website, but for the extraordinary holiday experience I had at Le Meridien Khao Lak, the hotel deserves a compliment. We stayed at this hotel for 4 consecutive years, every stay was a pleasant experience and we stayed 3 weeks at this hotel in January 2012.

The staffs are very attentive, and here are a few occasions they have impressed me – they remember our favorite table and drink in each restaurant, we booked our dinner and all were perfectly prepared and served. Khun Kob made the afford and took us for a tour to the local market on his day off and Khun Karn, chief security took us for a special bike tour in Khao Lak. There are more people we would like to recognize in this review but I just can’t remember all their names. In my perception all of them are wonderful people and they are the people who bring us back every year.

We dined in the resort’s restaurant most of the time and we love the food. We tried the food twice in the Rimlay restaurant on the beach for lunch and the location is beautiful and pleasant.

Our spa experience was very relaxing in a beautiful and spacious spa treatment room. The masseuses are well trained and are knowledgeable of the pressure points. For a 60 minutes massage we paid USD60 which is far cheaper than what we paid in Europe. We checked out the local beach massage once, but that was it and we will never return because of the hygiene issue.

We will return again next year to our holiday home in Khao Lak, see you soon.

Room Tip: Delux room
