“Shouldn't have stayed here”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

This was the smallest room we had for the entire trip. The room had very basic furnishing and didn’t seem too clean. There was only one electrical point in the room, which could only be accessed by climbing onto the bed. How silly is that!

The shower cubicle had stains everywhere and the shower drain was clogged so be prepared to have your feet immersed in dirty shower water. The shower was the primitive fixed, overhead shower so I had a terrible time trying to shower my 2yo, who absolutely hates water running down her face.

Service could have been better too. When we asked for an adapter, all we got was a curt "Finished" and the staff waved the empty box in front of us.

At the restaurant, only one staff was working to take orders, serve food, clean up and take care of the bills. And tonnes of mosquitos flying around so please get your mozzie repellant ready. The saving grace was that food was nice.

Of course they had a nice beach but any hotel along this stretch will have the same nice beach.

We had asked our guide to book this hotel after reading some nice reviews, but I will definitely not stay here again if ever I'm back in Negombo. Our guide also told us that many people asked him to book this hotel, so I think many people are just as misguided as we were.

“Shaky start, but good in the end.”

We first emailed We first emailed the hotel to make a booking, when they didn’t reply we phoned them to confirm a double room, at 2600. We advised the hotel we would be arriving at 3am after a long flight. The man who we spoke to did not seem very coherent on the phone, despite saying yes we weren’t sure if he had understood us.
When we arrived at 3am, the man at reception denied all knowledge of our booking, and tried to charge us 3600 saying there were no other rooms available. A slight confrontation occurred and we decided to move to another hotel. We went back to the Silver Sands after the receptionist followed us down the road. A miracle had occurred! Suddenly there was a room free for us to stay at the slightly cheaper price of 2450, under the name of Toom (Slight variation of Tom).

Not sure even now if it was an innocent mistake, or a ploy to get us to pay extra. But after this all the staff were very nice, and we couldn’t fault them.
We stayed in Room 15, there was a bit of an ant problem by the bathroom door, and in the restaurant. The rooms were small, but clean and the showers had hot water and were a good pressure. The view from our room was not great, but better than in the courtyard where most of the other rooms are. But the breakfast restaurant was right next to the beach, and you could watch the boats coming in.

Lots of mosquitoes, in the reception area, so bring bug spray! The Wifi is only in the reception area, so prepared to get bitten! The pancake restaurant next door has better wifi and no mosquitoes so maybe go there instead.

“Good basic place to stay”

We stayed 2 nights in Silver Sands and had a room with A/C. The size of the room was very good and we especially liked the huge terrace with sea view. Room had a mosquito net and hot/cold water but no TV. Basic, but good and also good price (about 30$). You can directly access the beach from the hotel; the hotel has a small restaurant and about 2 sunbeds (which have seen better times). Pick up from airport costs 1'700 RS which is okay compared to the charges of other, bigger hotels.

“Good for an older budget hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

I pre-booked one night’s stay here for an early morning flight. I saw a few negative reviews about this hotel but I had no problems with it. It was a good budget option - its older style rooms and facilities but they were clean enough, tho not spotless. It was basic but had everything you needed including free wifi in the reception area. It was to the standard I would expect for a budget place so close to the airport. They were very efficient at confirming my bookings and responding to my other email enquiries

“always accomodating”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011

we have stayed here 4-5 times over the years-very convenient location close to the airport
the old boy who runs it - a real gent-they always do what they can to accommodate you even if it means shifting a few rooms about-rooms closer to the sea are the best with lovely verandah spaces-rooms are sparse but clean at around 20 -25 usd max- i am sure he ( ?walter ) could charge more given their beach front location but he is a gent as i said
restaurant is well priced with cold beers and the staff do try to be helpful- all in all always a pleasure to stop bye-i must i do prefer it out of season as it gets packed with groups
wifi is dodgy but works only in reception

Room Tip: sea view upper floor near seaside
