“Nice, but $$ place to stay”

To agree with many others, although it is nice that this hotel offers "Swissness," this isn't a place to have Switzerland type prices. I came to stay here when I 1st came to Sri Lanka because it seemed like a safe, nice place to stay close to the airport. When I came at 1am, there was a small snafu with my reservation, but it was handled and I got a room for the night, which ended up being the #7 room which probably typical Sri Lanka would be no more than 1500-2000 Rs. Instead it was 27 euros, ouch! I stayed there again on my way back and stayed in room #6, the "cheapest" of the room, which was 19 euros. The room was nice, but tiny and again, I think waaay overpriced. The food especially was super overpriced, 600Rs for the muesli for breakfast.
The atmosphere if very nice, there is free wi-fi by the restaurant, a nice breeze, nice decor, and loved the classical music that was playing. The staff was super professional and they all spoke English well. There were plenty of restaurants walking down the Beach Road, to the left.
Overall, nice place... if you are willing to spend some money.
p.s. On a random side note, Negombo has mosquitoes EVERYWHERE! All the rooms have nets and a mosquito-repellent plug-ins, but still come prepared with bug spray. I got bitten alive!

“Top place in Negombo”

Perfect for arrival and departure of holiday in Sri Lanka - only 20 minutes from the airport, yet quiet beach location. Plenty of atmosphere, nice garden, friendly staff. Rooms nice, but I think they vary a lot. Our seafront one was spacious and nicely furnished. Only things not so good were food - it is Ok, but European style rather than curry. Price a little steep, but it was worth it for a couple of nights. I would stay here again. The airport transfers were very reliable, although a little pricey again.

“Swiss prices are absolutly not okay in this guesthouse”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2010

We travelled almost 4 weeks across Sri Lanka- this was definitly one of the top worst value for price. The rooms are ok- cause there are less little guest houses on Sri Lanka which are clean actually.
But the food was too expensiv for what you get. The omlette cheese omlette was not nearly flattering, but flat tasty. I am shocked by the beach in front- there is dirt all over- mayby oel also in the sand....well- even if the stuff was very friendly and nice- this place is not recommendably and I am little embaressed how the swiss owner promods his food on the card- cause living in Zuerich I know what good food tastes like!

“Swifficiency is a good way to describe the Icebear”

We stayed on both ends of our trip to Sri Lanka. This place runs like a swiss watch while it acts like a funky island escape. The rooms are clean and well maintained with some units having a small kitchen and private baths, while others are room only with shared bath. Some rooms have AC. The property is kept very clean including all the rooms, bathrooms, and common areas. The rooms are decorated heavily, with art and bric-a-brac; and the common areas are full of cozy seating on the patio and in the garden. There is a fairly popular restaurant operating on the veranda of one big building containing several rooms. The menu has a mixture of european staples with a bit of Sri Lankan cross over. There is a masseuse on staff operating from an ayurveda hut in the garden. There is a front desk and several rooms in another building with a huge front patio. This is oceanfront, but without ocean view unless you stand up and look over the wall. There is a gate that opens directly to the beach. The beach has lots of trash and the sign posted recommends swimming in local hotel pools rather than the sea. There are lots of misquitoes at dusk. Despite the beach and bites, we enjoyed the stay both times. We had special requests regarding early breakfast due to our travel schedules and these were agreed to and delivered right down to the minute. Every request was immediately filled during the stay. The staff is very well trained at service, from the front desk manager all the way to the night watchman. The price seemed a little high for Sri Lanka, but after staying we found it to be an excellent value considering the proximity to the airport and service received. We stayed in the best rooms on the property and paid under our budget of USD60 per night including taxes. We ate dinner and breakfast on property. Both meals were tasty and prepared well with nice looking ingredients.

“Pefect Private Getway, near airport”

IceBear is a 15 minute drive from the airport, so an excellent place to stay for convenience. I traveled with a friend, and when we arrived around 8pm we were the only guests staying overnight. There were 3-4 staff members present and they opened the kitchen to cook us dinner. The hotel is right on the beach and full of lounge chairs, hammocks, tree swings and lovely palm trees. Even in the midst of strong winds and rain, the Wi-Fi connection still worked. Our room had A/C, which was great. Overall, it was a great place to stay...no complaints...just bring insect repellant!
