We stayed at Ayubowan guest house for two weeks in January 2012.
The guest house is immaculate, but to the point where you are unable to relax and feel comfortable.
When we arrived at our room, we were surprised that there were no tea or coffee facilities for guests, either in the rooms or in a communal area, as we have come to expect these refreshments as standard at all accommodation we normally stay at.
Our room contained a wardrobe and dressing table. There was no chest of drawers so all folded clothes and underwear had to be stored on the shelf in the wardrobe.
When we closed the door to our room, we were met with 5 notices on the back of the door(see attached photo), there were further rules in the booklet (see attached photos).
The mattress on the bed was 3in thick, but so worn it had the indentations of slats of the bed frame, and thus made sleeping very difficult.
It became so bad, we asked for a new mattress, but was told they take 2 and a half weeks to order, so there was no alternative for us.
We did speak to the owners regarding the lack of tea and coffee facilities, about all the rules, and tried to explain how this was from a guests point of view. However this turned out to be a big mistake as we were met with incredible rudeness from Ron, who got very angry, and he only stopped when told by his wife to go away, as he was making matters worse.
We did try and find other accommodation, as my wife was extremely upset about how we had been spoken to, but unfortunately everywhere we tried was fully booked.
This guest house is ideal if you can stay within these rules, can sleep on a wooden pallet but like clean accommodation for a night or two.
Room Tip: Try the Serendip Guest House (fridge, tea and coffee in room and no rules)

We have been waiting for your review & surprised that it has taken this long to post it despite a comment you made on how you do not believe in writing reviews.
First let us take the issue of tea/coffee making facilities. Although we do not have this facility in the rooms or other areas we do provide tea/coffee at the guests request from 7am, it is printed in the information book, a pity you did not take a photograph of that too, & will serve it anywhere, inside or outside the house (even the toilet if you wish). You chose not to make use of this provision as you did not like to ask, your words. Your wife brought her own coffee a blend that she likes & which can be bought in Sri Lanka so we could have provided that too along with her thermal jug of hot water & jug of milk that she had at the time of need, you did not hold back when asking for that. When this issue arose after one week into your stay you were told then, as you were previously, that we would be happy to bring it to your room early morning but you did not want this as you did not know at what time you would wake up, you always had your first mug of the day as soon as you came out of your room & before breakfast.
The issue regarding the mattress which is 4” thick & just a few years old, it is not so worn as you put it. Again after one week into your stay you woke with a sore shoulder & mentioned that the mattress had been a problem all week, we asked why you had not told us sooner, this was met by a sarcastic remark from you wife. At no point did you ask for a new mattress. We went off that day to try & purchase a new one but due to the size it had to be ordered & would take 2 to 2 1/2 weeks for delivery, not 2 1/2 weeks to order as you say. We have had guests stay for a much longer period than you in the same room with no complaints, quite the contrary. You hired bicycles for the whole period you were here that you were not use too & rode them every day, you slept in a draft all night from either the air conditioning or ceiling fan, could not any of these been a contributing factor to your sore shoulder?
You mention no chest of drawers in your room, if placing items of clothing on a shelf in the wardrobe was such a problem why did you not bring it to our attention, we have such items of furniture in the house & would have quite happily obliged.
You mention notices on the back of the bedroom door, but have failed to mention they have a heading, polite notices, not rules. One rule we do have is in regard to activity around the swimming pool due to its depth & is quite clearly signed. No matter where you stay there will always be certain rules which are there for the comfort & safety of the guest. You brought to our attention the information book & said it contained rules, we sat down with you & went through each page, you did not find one that was a rule, it was at that point voices were raised, yes Ron raised his voice, as did your wife, which was unforgivable on Ron’s part but understandable given the exaggerated comment you made, it was both parties that were told to stop & go away. When asked if there were any other issues, you said had you known there were no tea/coffee making facilities you would never had booked with us, the subject of the mattress came up again so we suggested if you were not happy here maybe you should look for other accommodation. It was quite obvious your wife was in a bad mood that morning by comments made, you openly admitted that she was grumpy in the mornings.
For someone who was unable to relax & feel comfortable because of the cleanliness of the guest house you seemed to have no problem lounging on the sofas most evenings watching the television.
We treat our guests all the same, be they strangers, family, friends, or in your wife’s case ex work colleague. No one will be given preferential treatment over another.
One thing we do not take too kindly to are comments being made on other guest houses using our site. How can anyone comment/recommend on premises they have not stayed in?
