“Enjoyed our time at the beach”

The location right on the beach was nice. We stayed in a bungalow by the pool. The food and service were good. Our only real complaints were the need for better pillows, a blanket on the beds and the peddlars on the beach were slightly annoying. The pool was very nice and the pool attendants provide pool/beach towels for use during your stay. The beach is wide and fairly clean and you can enjoy playing in the waves. We would stay there again.

“Good value for Negombo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

We stayed here over new year and found it good value for Negombo which is more expensive than other beach areas in Sri Lanka. The new years buffet was first class and breakfast had a decent selection. Rooms were clean and customer service decent. Ideal place to stay near the airport at the beginning or end of a trip.

Room Tip: Stay in the room away from the main building where reception is as they are quieter and have good vi...

“to be avoided”

We read the trip advisor reviews but are a bit confused... did we visit the same hotel??!! We only stayed 1 night, had an early flight out but even for this purpose we would NOT recommend the hotel. Service lousy (wifi not for free unless you say you will not pay and then they will just give you the code) rooms are of poor 2 star quality (and we apparently had a just refurbished room) bathroom very small, foul smell coming out of the gutter in the bathroom, balcony made of wood not to be trusted (I weigh 120 pounds and it cracked when I stepped out!). Food average. Poolman when approached does ask for your room number but then does not bring you towels ("oh did you want towels?"). Yes it sits on the brach however the beach is quite wide and the hotel only has a s strip cordoned off - to get to the stare you will have to cross the 'public' beach. Not a problem, but when we visited there was a very lively baseball game going on on the beach just in front of the hotel which made it impossible to pass and the noise was at one point a bit too much for our taste. Overall very disappointing stay.

Room Tip: although probably the same size, the rooms in the little detached building behind the pool looked ni...

“Post long haul relaxation”

We booked into Goldi Sands due to its proximity to the airport, and a 2.30am arrival. The room was a decent size, and furnished to the standard expected of the hotels' 3 star rating. The room was clean and comfortable, and having a particularly long balcony put us on the fringe of the beach with lovely views of palm trees and sea. Although offering a limited range of buffet food, meals were satisfying and tasty, with cabaret type entertainment provided by local artistes during the evening. We had opted for an all-inclusive package during our 3 night stay, and provided good value, although there are some strange anomalies with beverage options - diet Coke, coffee (outside of meal times), bottled beer and wine are not available as all-inclusive for some reason, and must be paid for separately. This aside, our stay was very enjoyable, with friendly staff going out of their way to look after us. Negombo beach is a decent beach, with a warm if turbulent sea to swim in, and the bustling town is worth a visit. Further afield, taking the train from Negombo to Colombo is incredibly cheap at just 40 rupees, and is a much more enjoyable and cheaper option to hiring a taxi. Goldi Sands is in a convenient location and offers really good value, well worth considering.

Room Tip: Rooms 113, 114 & 115 have especially long balconies to get the closest views of the beach

“Value for money”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

Goldi Sands is a small hotel, which has been recently renovated. The hotel itself is clean and welcoming as are the rooms. The rooms are well appointed and cleanliness has been well looked into. The hotel opens onto the Negombo beach, which itself is wonderful, although the sea may not be safe to swim in, however the hotel does have a good pool in the event you do need to take a dip. The food could have a better spread, though I wouldn't complain about its quality. Although the hotel is not one fall in love with it is value for money.
