We are a young couple and cos we are in Maldives, we decided to spend two days in Sri Lanka for the week end. We booked the flight and we landed in Lanka without booking the hotel, sure to find something at our arrival.. looking back was a bad idea! In the airport we accepted the help of a director of a accommodation+transport agency who told us he will organize our stay in a nice hotel near the beach into a double deluxe room with ac, sea view and breakfast for 75$ + 30$ of roundtrip taxi. We werent sure to accept at the beginning and we have also being insulted from the other person in the agency in local language; at least we gave 110$ and the director kept 5$ as "his bill".. just to be clear, 5$ not make the difference, but it was fair to tell that the bill of agency was not included in the 105$ he said and not keeping 5$ cos he doesnt have a rest..
Well after 20min of taxi and mosquitos bites, we arrived at Topaz: from the outside we saw that wasnt a modern hotel, but we planned to stay one night so we checked in. The shock was when we saw the room: totally unclean, with toilet that not flush, trash on the dustbin, opened shampoo packed on the shower holder, no box or tent shower, the window was blocked and there was not the observer, floor uncleaned and walls ruined; the closet was full of dust with papers on the below, the mosquito tent was already broken as for the windows tents, the ac was over the bed and looses water over the pillows, towels broken and fan wing bended. When we went to the reception to ask to fix at least the toilet, they said nobody was available in the night. The hotel is in a good position in front of a Italian restaurant were we had a delicious dinner and lunch, but right after the breakfast we check out from the hotel.
I see that Topaz has different kind of room... but we get one of the worst and for 75$ we should get first of all what the agency told us, second something appropriate. Some reviews say is a nice place, well if you saw room 6 you will definitely change opinion!
