We paid USD 45 per night for an a/c room without breakfast, expecting a basic but comfortable experience.
We were initially given a tiny, claustrophobic, hell-hole of a room. The a/c only recirculated hot air with no cooling effect whatsoever. There was filth by the side of the bed.
The curtains were filthy.
The bathroom was old, grotty and completely unacceptable if you are paying USD 45 per night.
The only saving grace of this hotel is the wonderful staff. There is a charming lady and a very helpful gentleman, whom we assumed to be in the employ of the family. Nothing was too much trouble for these lovely people. When we complained about the room they did move us into a slightly better room and did get the a/c in that replacement room to work. However, although the replacement room was better, it was still not worth USD 45 per night. The bathroom in this room absolutely stank of urine/drainage issues.
I gave up backpacking many years ago. Ocean View is essentially a backpackers' dive charging trumped-up rates.
The family that owns the guest house also owns the attached jewellery store, and we became tired of the constant invitations to examine their wares.

Now, I wouldn't suggest you go out of your way to stay here, but my experience was nothing like some of the nonsense written by other reviewers.

Our room was pretty small, but the bathroom was smart and spotless and well equipped and we had a comfy four poster bed (with a mozzie net attached to the frame so it didnt drape over us or fall off the bed in the night). Nice balcony and roof garden for watching the sunsets.

Hostess was very nice and very helpful, gave us info about restaurants and things to do. We did get ambushed about their shop on the way out (but by the shop assistant not by the guest house owner). Food isn't really their thing other than at breakfast.

$50 including tax - there are smarter places in the Fort but I don;t expect they would be cheaper as Galle seems to have its own pricing structure!!

Taxi in their car to Colombo airport was again a bit pricey at 11,000R including the tip that the driver extracted. But it's a very comfy car and we got there in 3 1/2 hours!

This was the worst place I have ever stayed in. Don't be fooled by their website, this place is very rundown. The room had a double bed with really dirty mosquito netting round it. There was a funny smell (musty) in the room and there was a bidet in the bathroom with something in it. The shower curtain was thin and I put my finger through it and there was a bizzare window in the shower so anyone walking up the stairs could see you. Although the A/C worked we were kept up all night with a window that kept banging in the wind. I don't think we even slept for 5 minutes. The worst thing was that they charged us a lot of a poor room. They quoted one price and then added a 10% service charge without telling us. The total cost of the room was 4000 rs +, which is very overpriced for what you get.

one of the best places to stay in Galle (saw everyone in this price), bit pricey but worths it, the owners are lovely, well educated and mannered, and the guest house has a beautiful terrace, with real grass as a carpet, -sthg i 've never seen before!- with a lovely view of the Indian Ocean.

Breakfast was lovely, and homemade.
