We stayed at the Amangalla for three nights between xmas and new year and it was the best. We had a beautiful chamber with a large balcony overlooking the garden, which meant lots of privacy, as the pool is further down. The balcony came with daybed and dinner table. The room was spacious with a large bed and separate sofa bed for our son. Glass doors were along the length of the room and could all be opened. A nice touch was the candle in the room
We were welcomed by the hotel manager and her dog who showed us around and was also very good with kids. My son loved her and her dog. Then after lunch we were taken to our room by our butler who was amazing all those days and made reservations for the best restaurants, arranged for breakfast in our room when we had to leave at 6am for our whale watching trip and found my sons swimwear, which I accidentally left between the towels.
The restaurant serves some really good curry dishes during lunch and dinner and the grilled tuna with pomelo salad was amazing.
The service is impeccable and they make you feel welcome and treat you like you deserve the best which is what a holiday is all about.

The only small detail was that our driver was actually at Colombo airport to pick us up while we were arriving from Kandy by seaplane. They had our flight number and knew we were arriving by seaplane…..Therefore we had to wait 30 minutes before the driver showed up at the riverbank.
And the other one was that breakfast was not included which I find strange for hotels of these standards. When making a reservation I do not even check if it is included because it always is, but not at the Amangalla....

This hotel is bliss. Totally luxurious yet retaining a great deal of its original character. An oasis of calm in the bustling fort. Charming staff, the best food we had in Galle, gorgeous pool. As with all the other hotels organised for us by our agent at Passepartout, Amangalla is somewhere we could not fault.

We went to Amangalla only for dinner, which was recommended by the manager of our hotel (we were staying in Tamarind Hills). The place did not have much of options for vegetarians, however, the chef made a delectable vegetarian spaghetti for us. The bread was warm and mushroom salad had the most flavorful oyster mushrooms that I have ever tasted.

The ambiance will instill romance in your soul and the service will bring a smile to your lips.

If you cannot afford staying here, make sure you have a meal here. It is worth every penny!

This hotel is truly heavenly despite the following issues, and I would highly recommend staying here for the general ambiance, design, service, pool and location.

We expect internet access in our rooms when staying in this class of accommodation. Good WiFi is available in the Library, but not in the rooms. We were originally provided with a 3G dongle that could not be configured to our mac laptop, and as we generally travel with multiple devices requiring internet access - computers, ipads and phones, it would not have been adequate for our needs even if it had worked. A subsequent 3G wifi router was provided the next day, however the access was manifestly slow. The hotel is aware of the problem and are going to attend to it in the future.

There are 2 additional things to watch out for if you are a troubled sleeper like myself
1.The pillows provided on the bed are not comfortable (though after requesting smaller and softer pillows they were quickly provided), and
2.The air conditioning and fan are really loud (though very effective), and it did make it hard to get a good nights sleep.



We stayed in one of the Garden suites - it is gorgeous and as a bonus it has its own balcony.
