“Walk your way : extremely poor value for money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Context one night during the literature festival of Galle before 2 days business trip in Colombo (3rd time in Sri Lanka).

It was hard to get a room for the weekend at a point I could not remember how I found Lady Hill Hotel.

Anyway that was one of the poorest experience in Asia over 10-yr in terms of value for money.

I paid 100 USD the night (vs. 6780 LKR for locals i.e. 60 USD). Yes, I am a foreigner so I had to pay more.

And frankly forget about this hotel.

Pro (quickly balanced by con’s):

- Looks nice from the outside. Common areas are ok perhaps appealing to some. My room 204 that looked like any of the other rooms was old, mirror broken, wood a bit rotten, fridge super noisy (I had to switch it off). Laundry was ok however. Safe did not work directly.
- Central (not really in fact you are on the top of the hill, tuk tuk to escape is recommended)
- Staff is nice but a bit slow
- View is nice

Con’s :

- Price (for me the room was worth was MAX 50 USD fair price would have been 40 USD)
- Room too old
- Amateur Service by students not trained. Nothing was efficient.
- Internet you have to pay
- I told them I would arrive at 7.00 am and when I arrived at 9.30 am it took 20 min to check at least.
- When you leave the resto and the lobby area, the hotel is far from charming …

Alternative go by the beach area where lots of a simple hotels of the same standard for 7000 LKR.

For 200 USD + go the fort of Galle inside the Fortress or Era Hotel in Talpe. There we are talking.

NB : locals pay 6780 LKR for the same room vs 100 USD for foreigners. I reflected that the price was not in line with the hotel and they gave me 10%. Not more.

We stayed here for one night as part of a tour. The rooms are basic but provide some lovely views. The staff are very friendly and food was good. Basic hotel but a comfortable stay.

“Wonderful potential - needs freshening up”

We stayed in Galle for the last night of our recent 8 day tour of Sri Lanka. We didn't choose the Lady Hill (it was booked by our tour company) and we were dubious about previous reviews (we never choose the lowest ranked place!) but our abiding impression is of a characterful property with lovely staff who work hard to provide good service. We're glad we stayed there. We were in a top floor room that faced out towards the city and offered a lovely view from its vantage point at the top of the hill. Only real downside for us was that our stay coincided with the full moon celebrations at the Buddhist monastery across the road - we were woken at 4am by some fairly cat like singing. With some fresh paint, new linens and beds - this could be a really fab hotel. Our bed was creaky, the pillows were flat & yet also lumpy - and the safe required re-setting but we still felt it had its own quirky charm. I was very surprised by how much my husband liked it. Galle is a lovely city and it was great to walk around it and we enjoyed walking back to the hotel. Not difficult from the centre if you've got any sense of direction & even better if you've got a torch with you! I hope the owners have the resources to invest in the hotel because it could be really special with a bit more TLC. I would also urge them to consider making WIFI free. Buying one hour vouchers really isn't what travellers expect these days.

Room Tip: Rooms at the top give the best views but keep in mind that there is no lift in this hotel - so if yo...

“Don't expect to be treated like a Lady”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

We chose to stay one night in Galle and opted for Lady Hill to avoid paying extortionately rising prices inside the fort. The local rate is killer cheap.

I learned the hotel was previously a "mansion" the owners have now converted into a hotel. By International standards I would say this is an EXCELLENT 3 star hotel. Rooms are clean, Bathrooms are functional, there is a small TV with cable channels, mini bar and airconditioning. Rooms also have a little balcony that offers the so called view.

The service however leaves much to be desired. It is unfortunate that locals insist on speaking in English to locals especially when giving directions! Case in point the receptionist. I found her to be confusing, abrupt and extremely rude. This carried on when the room which we specifically booked (for the view, so nothing lost!) had been given to another guest as they had extended their stay. Understandable. The polite thing to do would have been to explain why the room was not given to us, NOT wait until we inquired about it. Guest Relations 101 Fail. Next came a conundrum about late check out and meals. When booking I requested Room only basis and a late checkout, we found ourselves being questioned about each meal and when we said we would decide in due time it did not seem sufficient. The receptionist seemed to have understood that late check out was on the basis we had lunch the next day! It was all quite irritating. Her line manager who sat a stones throw away took up the issue with her and told her " not to make a problem out of an issue" ( in Sinhala it was quite comical but outright rude in front of guests) My point here is that it is understandable that there can be misunderstandings and confusion about reservations - who hasnt this happened to? However, the shortfall with lady hill was in the way they handled the matter.

That evening we RESERVED a table at the restaurant only to find that the table had been given to someone else when we turned up for dinner. They made no effort to inform us. We were told the telephone at the bar/restaurant doesnt allow for calls to rooms. Perhaps they could have taken the one flight of stairs downstairs to let us know? We were in house guests. When we were eventually seated for dinner we enjoyed a wonderful seafood platter and pepper steak with retro seafood cocktails to start. The price of dinner was in excess of our stay, but portions were huge and the staff were polite and served us speedily once we sat down. Old school menu which is being executed well! The restaurant offers a nice view of the harbour which we were able to observe from the bar!

Great place to stay in terms of no frills accomodation. Cheap, Functional and in close proximity to the Galle Fort and Train Station. Thats where it ends.

Room Tip: Take your own towels if you are finicky

“Tucked away from hurly burly - bit quirky and great”

Hotel is 10 min walk up hill from Galle new town and only 200 rupee tuck tuck ride away. Slightly older hotel than most we have been too so the rooms are smaller and bathrooms slightly jaded. The roof top restaurant is lovely though very breezy - I would recommend this hotel and Galle which is quite different from other towns
