We absolutely loved Mama's and, though I haven't stayed elsewhere in Galle, will assert that this charming little place just might be the best guesthouse in town.
You'll definitely want to stay within the old fort walls, and Mama's is brilliantly located towards the southern part of the old town, which means a short 3-minute walk to the walls for a morning or early-evening stroll around the perimeter. Right around the corner is the somewhat hard-to-find Nescafe, which serves some of the best roti we had in Sri Lanka. Elsewhere in the vicinity are numerous shops, restaurants, and the Galle Fort Hotel for upmarket cocktails.
Speaking of restaurants, the best one in town is at Mama's itself. Situated on the roof with sweeping views of the ocean and rooftops, we dined here all three nights and enjoyed three of the best meals we had in Sri Lanka. Breakfast is also inclusive with the room rate and was every bit as delicious as dinner. Even if for some reason you don't end up staying here, make it a priority to eat here. You won't be disappointed.
There are only two rooms in the guesthouse, so book in advance, especially during high season. We took Room #2, which was spacious, airy, and well-appointed with antique furniture and comfortable beds. The A/C more than did the job, we loved the sitting area, and the bathroom was perfectly fine. Room #1 has a balcony and is similarly large, so you really can't go wrong with either one. Some other reviewers mentioned "noise" from the mosque: it's no big deal whatsoever. It lasts for less than a minute, and I actually kind of liked it and thought it added to the feeling of being in Galle.
There's a shared computer with free Internet on the main floor, and though I couldn't get it to work on my netbook there's supposedly free wi-fi as well.
Finally, the entire staff was super friendly and accommodating, some of the nicest people we met in Sri Lanka (though, of course, most everybody we met in Sri Lanka was welcoming too). We loved Mama's, and think you will too.
