“Nice place in the Fort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2011

The double rooms here are suite size, the downside is the lack of a view of any sort unless you go and sit in the roof top resturant. Rooms are very clean and comfortable but the room I had was above the kitchen with consequent noise in the evening, as things close down early it doesn't really interfere with sleep.
Food was good but service could be slow when busy or during Friday Prayers

“This place is good - but it has the potential to be great!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2010

We stayed for a night and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The rooms are large and unique and the rooftop restaurant is lovely - however this experience could be amazing - the rooms are a little tired - and if they spend a bit of money to refresh the paint on the walls and style it up a bit, they could easily charge double than what they are charging.

Also, to say the place only has 2 rooms, the service is a bit chaotic. They lost our booking so when we did turn up, we were lucky that one of the rooms was free - as they claimed no knowledge of them confirming a room to me 2 weeks before. Also, as the rooftop restaurant is popular, due to the great food, the service is a bit slow.

“Fabulous food and shabby chic charm”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2010

We arrived at Mama's under grey skies, but Galle Fort was soon working its charm. Mama's only has two rooms. We had room 2, which in the world of slightly plusher hotels would be called a suite. It had a lovely little entrance room, a large bedroom and a bathroom bigger than many a bedroom. The best bit was the enclosed verandah (lined with windows and wooden shutters) looking down on to the street. below As the rain came down I could peep out and watch the brightly coloured umbrellas swish by.
The building is full of lovely features that are slightly crumbling and faded, but laced with charm. Hence shabby, chic. Don't expect designer glam.
I don't know what the second bedroom is like, but our room while crisply painted in white was terribly damp. I suspect this is is a hazard of many places in Galle Fort. It was not a problem for us, and I'd go back in a flash, but it could put some people off .
The icing on the cake about Mama's was the delicious food. Had rice with prawn curry one night, rice with fish curry the next - a host of vegetable dishes that were entirely different on each night. And all served up on a flower-laden roof-top - if rain permits!

“Fantastic Guesthouse and Amazing Restaurant Too!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2010

We absolutely loved Mama's and, though I haven't stayed elsewhere in Galle, will assert that this charming little place just might be the best guesthouse in town.

You'll definitely want to stay within the old fort walls, and Mama's is brilliantly located towards the southern part of the old town, which means a short 3-minute walk to the walls for a morning or early-evening stroll around the perimeter. Right around the corner is the somewhat hard-to-find Nescafe, which serves some of the best roti we had in Sri Lanka. Elsewhere in the vicinity are numerous shops, restaurants, and the Galle Fort Hotel for upmarket cocktails.

Speaking of restaurants, the best one in town is at Mama's itself. Situated on the roof with sweeping views of the ocean and rooftops, we dined here all three nights and enjoyed three of the best meals we had in Sri Lanka. Breakfast is also inclusive with the room rate and was every bit as delicious as dinner. Even if for some reason you don't end up staying here, make it a priority to eat here. You won't be disappointed.

There are only two rooms in the guesthouse, so book in advance, especially during high season. We took Room #2, which was spacious, airy, and well-appointed with antique furniture and comfortable beds. The A/C more than did the job, we loved the sitting area, and the bathroom was perfectly fine. Room #1 has a balcony and is similarly large, so you really can't go wrong with either one. Some other reviewers mentioned "noise" from the mosque: it's no big deal whatsoever. It lasts for less than a minute, and I actually kind of liked it and thought it added to the feeling of being in Galle.

There's a shared computer with free Internet on the main floor, and though I couldn't get it to work on my netbook there's supposedly free wi-fi as well.

Finally, the entire staff was super friendly and accommodating, some of the nicest people we met in Sri Lanka (though, of course, most everybody we met in Sri Lanka was welcoming too). We loved Mama's, and think you will too.
