A tour operator from Brazil asked me to join him in Tiberias this week, as he is preparing a large Bible Tour in the area for Easter.
We stayed at the Tiberias Hostel for three days and although the outside is a little neglected, we were pleasantly surprised by the warm and ecclectic atmosphere in the Reception and lounge.
The Staff is multi-lingual, we received maps of the entire Galilee region as well as precise directions to all the sites in the area.
The owner and his associate are locals and we appreciated receiving many useful tips on what to be aware of - prices of souvenirs, where to shop in the "Shuk" which is conveniently located several minutes from the Hostel, as are Banks, the Post Office and a large Pharmacy. The Central Bus Station is minutes away, which is a relief when you have heavy luggage.
My friend from Brazil was baptized in Kibbutz Yardenit, which is a lovely, tranquil haven. I had tears in my eyes when I saw the joy and emotion on his face.
Meir, the owner of the Hostel, had prepared meatball soup and pasta for lunch, which we ate heartily (the waters of the Jordan river are very chilly, to say the least!)
No charge.
The mattresses are thick and there is heating, a fridge and a television in every dorm, with all the international satellite channnels.
For 75 shekels a night, these are unique perks. We will be back, for sure.
