“It was a horrible experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2011

I'm not sure where some of the people stayed on this survey but the carpet was torn and stained, the place stunk the towels had stains on them. I paid for three nights and only stayed one.. lost over $500.00.. the night we slept there we slept in our sleeping bags because it was so nasty. When I went looking for other quarters to stay in and shared where we were staying..the towns people were more than willing to help. If you are just wanting a place to lay your head and don't care about what it looks like..then this is the place, but if you are looking to truly have a fantastic vacation experience.. I highly recommend you look elsewhere. I firmly believe management is use to people not staying because they keep you money even if you don't stay the full time.

We are very sorry these guests found their experience lacking. We bleach the bathrooms and showers, change the linens and towels after every check out. Like every hotel, some of our towels and linens have stains, but they are clean. If any guest ever expresses a concern we are happy to change or clean the offending item right before their eyes. You do not get into this business without getting a bad review on occasion. The vast majority of guests enjoy their stay here. If this review gives you any concerns please mention it when you call and we will happy to address it.

“Spend a little extra and stay somewhere else”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2010

On a two week road trip with my 12 year old daughter, thought it would be fun to stay at the hostel and save a little money. Yuck! Place was dirty and run down, we left as soon as we could the next morning. First looked at the teepees but the sight of the mattresses on the ground was a turn off (envisioned bugs, critters, dirt), plus the teepee fabric was damp by the evening and appeared very wet from the dew by morning. Instead stayed in a private room downstairs. Room was clean and relatively comfy, the electic decor (Asian, New Mexico, ?) made us laugh. Must be a shortage of plumbing fixtures in Taos as there were no knobs to turn the water on in the downstairs shower (locking vice grip instead) and the outdoor washroom didn't have a knob for hot water. Didn't notice until the next morning they use the backyard as a dump, old mattresses and junk strewn about behind the teepees and tent area--yuck!. Front desk staff were okay but the surly manager/owner that was in the kitchen early in the morning was a jerk, getting all snippy when I asked about the whereabouts of the bathroom/shower. We did meet an interesting elderly gentleman that was staying there, besides one other family most were young adults or were a group of young hippies that commune there over the summer. We referred to it the rest of the trip as the 'hostage' and laugh about the experience now. Skip this hostel, spend a little extra for something else.

“I like it here very much!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2010

Helpful people at front desk; fresh vegetables from their garden to cook; inexpensive. We didn't get to sleep in the teepees, but the rest of the visit was great! People were nice and friendly; room was clean; bath and shower worked. And it's a block from the Taos Cow! Can't beat that!!

“Definitely An Adventure and a Hostel!?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2010

If you stay here you should now what to expect or you will probably be disappointed.

Pros: New experience. Pretty good price but it wouldn't have cost much more to stay in Taos. They were cool with us keeping our two small dogs in our room with us. We had a private room (although it had bunk beds for 8 people and 1 full size bed).

Cons: Old, lumpy bed with variety of sheets and blankets. Very bad plumbing that was not very reliable. Kind of expensive for what we were getting. I agree with the other review that the staff seems helpful but not all on the same page. Their system seems to generate some issues and questions about bills, deposits, etc.

“Unforgettable place, as part of an unforgettable adventure!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2010

Actually stayed here about a 15-16 years ago, as part of an incredible trip with an unforgettable "Friend!" Stayed in late September while it was still a hostel, and had a private room, with a private bath. From the photos, everything looks exactly the same, and if that's true about the little village it was in, even better, but either way, if your spending some time around Taos, this is the ONLY place to stay! Hope to get there again some day, but don't think it will be with old friend, although that would be the only thing that could make this place better. If bakery is still couple doors down, and they happen to be closed the day your there ( I seem to remember them being closed the 1st 2 days I was there), stay another night until they open. We actually did stay to try it out. All I can say is we even stayed ANOTHER day after that, just to go back again before leaving Taos!
