My wife and I went to Nihiwatu for our honeymoon. We picked it because we didn't want a huge resort with a bunch of people. We wanted a more intimate place. We had no idea how good our selection was until we got there. The island of Sumba is very underdeveloped. It is about a 1.5 hour drive from the airport to Nihiwatu. Basically you are traveling from one side of the island to the other. Having traveled to Mexico many many times I saw many similarities and truly enjoyed the ride.
My wife and I are not surfers. We knew this was a surf resort when we booked it but didn't realize that we would be the only non-surfers there. We did take surfing lessons, but I wouldn't claim to be a surfer now. If you are looking for uber-luxury, this is not your place. The bungalows are very nice, but they are not super clean or luxurious. You are after all staying on the beach at the edge of a jungle. They were building new accommodations while we were there and it is my understanding that the bungalows we stayed in will be remodeled very shortly.
There was literally about 20 guests total at the resort. It was definitely not full. I am sure that is not always the case but we absolutely loved it. If we wanted privacy there was plenty to be had. Nihiwatu has many little areas with beach chairs that are tucked away with shade and privacy. Want to use the pool? Chances are there is nobody around. It really was amazing. There were only 2 other Americans there with the rest of the guests being from Australia. We made what we hope to be live long friends with several of the guests. One couple was there for there 2nd time and another family was on their 3rd trip.
If you want a place where you can lay in the sun, surf, walk for hours on a completely deserted beach, or just read a good book this is the place. Since the food is included we expected cruise ship quality food. We were wrong. It was amazing! Each morning at breakfast they give you a menu with options for lunch and dinner. You can have those meals served whenever and wherever you want on the property for no additional charge.
Alcohol is not included and yes it is expensive but we also spent several days in Bali and found it to be expensive everywhere. Hard alcohol and wine are definitely more expensive. Beer is the best value. Considering how hard it is to get anything supply wise to Nihiwatu I found the prices to be reasonable for a resort.
The extra activities do cost money and they have the sign posted that lists them all but they don't exactly mention price or explain any of that up front. I wasn't to upset, just keep that in mind. Brad and Christian are awesome and they are very eager to teach you to surf or take you diving. I went on 2 dives, my wife did 1 and learned to dive in the pool first, we both took a surf lesson, and I really like to drink on vacation so our extras totaled about $1500 US. at the end of the week with most of that being our bar tab :-)
