Oh Gustis, we had such high expectations for you! My sister highly recommended this place, after her stay there two years ago. She spoke of personal "manservants" who were at your beck and call, and commended the lush grounds. Well, she was correct on the latter--our balcony overlooked the tropical trees and fauna bordering a hidden ravine. I would've enjoyed sitting on our deck to gaze at them more, if I hadn't been worried about ants/bugs infesting the very musty/old seat cushions that adorned the wicker chairs provided. Unfortunately, "musty/old" was precisely the problem with Gustis. Aside from the absence of manservants and the general indifference of the staff (the Gusti family?) overall, our biggest complaint was the bedding--our bed was covered with musty sheets that just felt dirty, and our pillows were quite hard. We might as well have been sleeping on sacks of rice. In addition, we had to ask for towel and toilet paper changes daily, the quality of both being less than par. Isn't a towel supposed to be somewhat absorbent? Can some stains be bleached out? Can we have any pool towels?
Speaking of the pool, the temperature seemed cooler than other pools we swam in, perhaps because it did not receive as much sunlight. Also, there are only 3 lounge chairs, and the pool is quite small.
My other complaints regarding the room: There was no fridge, air con (a fan sufficed) nor television. The lights were so dim I could not even read at night without straining my eyes--this may be prevalent throughout Bali, however, as an attempt to conserve energy.
Without much light to read, nor a television, nor a nightlife in general in Ubud, sleep is the best thing to do at night. However, when you're staying in a family compound where members must yell at each other from across varying levels of the terrain, it is difficult to get much peace, especially at 7 in the morning.
On the plus side, we did have hot shower water and there were no bugs in our room. The room only cost $25 a night and is in a great location--close to the Lotus Cafe, market, and Palace, and on a charming street with engraved, cement tiles.
