I have finally gotten around to writing a review on the Barong and our experience on our stay in 2009. We are coming back to Ubud in 3 weeks and will be avoiding this hotel like the plague.
We booked a pool villa after being impressed with the pictures and cute looking villa.
After the hefty 'luxury' price we paid, we expected a transfer from our hotel in Legian (Niksoma, which is HIGHLY recommended if you're staying in the South) but no, we had to arrange our own transport on the day which was inconvenient as it was a 'public holiday' in Bali and there was minimal transport around for a change.
Upon arrival at the hotel we were left at the lobby (which was very unimpressive) for at least 5 minutes before we were served.
The outside of our villa was tiny and felt like a compound. The bedroom itself was tiny, there was no variety on the tv (I know you're not over there to watch the tele but at the very end of the day it's nice to chill out for 1/2 an hour!). The bathroom was musty and the whole interior felt like it hadn't had a good clean in years.
The linen, cushions and fly net smelt must and were OLD.
We bought a carton of beer to drink with us during the stay. Not ONE bottle was ever thrown away the 5 nights we stayed there! So by the end of our stay we had an empty carton worth of beers lined up in our out door area.
We never ate there once apart from our included breakfast which was average. The coffee was AWFUL both at breakfast and in the room.
Not once did we feel like a valued guest, we never saw staff around the grounds except for breakfast and it was a miserable atmosphere.
One Pro: The main pool is gorgeous and the grounds around it are lovely.
Obviously it's been 3 years since I was there so there may have been dramatic changes, but we still talk negatively about the hotel and wished we paid around the same amount and went back to the Pita Maha...
