“Beautiful, tastefully decorated villas in stunning peaceful location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2011

I have stayed at Alam Puri frequently over the past few months during breaks from work and it is an ideal peaceful getaway. It's perfect if you want a quiet relaxing break as it is small, traditionally Balinese and unique unlike the typical touristy resorts. I really enjoy having fresh coffee and pisang goreng served out on the verandas while admiring the unobstructed view from the balconies of the farmers working in the rice paddies. The villas are really tastefully decorated with artwork, plenty of comfy chairs and gorgeous wood carvings and stone figures. The gardens are equally tasteful and clasically Balinese. The art museum is also quaint with an interesting assortment of tribal artifacts and has a great view from the top floor of the surrounding countryside.

I look forward to returning in 2011 with my family for a longer stay and going out cycling around the village and local area.

Terima kasih banyak to Alam Puri.

“Excellent villa”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2010

We book this villa knowing that it is 20min away from Ubud and we enjoyed the stay very much. The villa is huge, much bigger than the most. We have a huge living room, a huge bedroom, spacious bathroom and they even have a huge wardrobe and dressing table. Our living room overlooks rice paddy fields so it is good to sit there read a book and relax. I wish to highlight the waiter that attends to us during breakfast always have a pleasant smile on his face and he is very attentive. When I am there, the wifi is down and that is personally something that I find it hard to live without.

They have free shuttle to Ubud. 2 shuttles to Central Ubud (10am, 2pm) and 2 returning (230pm and 9pm). If u take a taxi or arrange for the hotel to pick u up at other timing, it will cost around US$10. We always hop on the 2pm shuttle and catch the 9pm shuttle back after a nice dinner.

If I have to nitpick, then:

If you are really fussy about the breakfast, then maybe this place is not for you. They have very limited selection. Standard American breakfast will just consist of eggs, bread, fresh juice and tea/coffee.
If you are looking to a huge lap pool then this villa might disappoint. The main pool is small compared to a standard pool size however it overlooks the paddy field so it is still pretty pleasant.
The aircon in my room is not cold. I find it stuffy if I use the blanket. For most nights, I end up kicking my blanket aside. Problem solved.

All in all, I enjoy my stay in Alam Puri. The villas are spacious, clean and quiet. I feel rejuvenated after my stay. Oh ya, one morning, a small chameleon dropped from the rooftop and landed in the middle of my bedroom, which gave me a shock. The staff was quick to rescue however the chameleon found an opening and ran away. No damage done, just a little scare and a good laugh.

“Not in Ubud”

Do not be fooled into thinking Alam Puri is in Ubud as it advertises, it is not. It is in North Denpasar - at least 25 minutes from UBUD. When booking on the internet my place of choice in Ubud was only available for 2 nights so for the third night I was advised of Alam Puri (also supposed to be in Ubud). After wanting to cancel I was talked into spending the night there and although it was a lovely setting the service also had a lot to be desired. I was told dinner was served till 10pm - they left at 9pm. The pool bar does not look like it had been used for years and trying to get a drink was almost impossible. Only one other couple were staying there and I can understand why.

“No problem”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2008

This is Bali, so nothing is as it is, it's always a bit different.

"Our driver will pick you at Denpasar Airport up on arrival bay taking a sign of Alam Puri Art Museum & Resort and your Name" it said in the e-mail from the resort. Even the date and time were right. But though we saw many drivers upon our arrival at Ngurah Rai airport, not a single one carried the promised sign with our name. So we called the hotel, to find out it was "no problem". Not to them that is. We were advised to "just take taxi".

So we arrived at the hotel only to find out not too many people take the risk of booking this place. The rest of the week went much the same as our arrival: you never know what to expect. Sometimes there were towels by the pool, sometimes there weren't. The promised internet connection was "in the office", not in the room (as promised on the website) and not even in the restaurant.
One day men were working on the lights of our private plunge pool. They happily nodded "yes" when I asked them if they were fixing the lights, but later I found out that the lights that had been working the previous night, were now not working anymore.

Yet the resort is beautiful and if you have no problem with many "no problems", you may have a pleasant stay here. Just don't expect excellence. Do yourself a favour and don't eat in the restaurant that is way too expensive as are, it has to be said, the rooms. Never book directly at the resort, but even when you book through Asiarooms or Agoda at $100 - $150 you pay more than what this very Balinese (in every sense of the word) resort is really worth. Not because of the rooms, the facilities or location, but simply because it lacks adequate services.
