A fair review!
Firstly, when compared with other hotels in Europe and western countries, this place is definitely not a palace. But for India and especially when compared to other places in Varanasi, then it is by every means a palace! It is perched high above the Ganges in the most beautiful location and the views are absolutely breathtaking! I had to force myself to leave the room!
The bed was super comfortable although there were stained sheets, and the blanket they gave me was clean and soft and not filled with dust as all blankets Ive used in India were!
The bathroom was a little squashy and the hot water only worked on the first day. It wasn't until I checked out, someone told me the switch had been turned off.
The breakfast was very basic and you even had to pay for a second cup of coffee! The food at the restaurant was delicious, a little overpriced but not my too much. The restaurant is located inside a cage so it feels like you're in a zoo but when the monkeys start to run about you're glad it's there. There's more seating outside caged areas with more breathtaking views.
The hotel charges double for everything that you can organise on your own.
But what made my stay entirely enjoyable was spending time with Laleet, a wise 15 year old student supplied by the hotel who took me around Varanasi and where ever I wanted to go. He was polite, curtious, knowledgeable and always wore a smile. He took me to his home and introduced me to his mother and I got a real feel for how the people of Varanasi live. He explained the burning rituals and about all the different Hindu gods. His English was great and nothing was too much for him. He was also honest and even cared for me after I had paid him. He helped with my bags and even bought me water as I was leaving. He truly restored my faith in humans. Don't change Laleet!
All in all my stay at Palace on Steps was enjoyable and if you don't expect more from India than it has to offer then you will also be pleased. Would definitely stay there again.
