First thing, when you get there book a guide , totally invaluable . We had Lalit, ask for him he was fantastic. We did this based on another trip advisor recommendation which wasn't wrong. Best money spent on my short trip
So back to Varanasi, if you have never been ,?forget any documentaries on the Ganges. This place is as unique as it gets and can't be shown on tv. The river is the hub edged by miles of dark alleyways , these are the roads . On the outskirts yes there's traffic and normal Indian madness but inside expect to navigate through these winding dark ( sometimes nerve wracking) narrow paths. As I said you are as equal as a cow , monkey, dog etc so expect to share your time with them
Ajays is a guesthouse , nice people , fantastic food and drink all served in a caged restaurant , seriously the tables are turned as the monkeys and chipmunks watch you eat. The guest house isn't clean ( but nor is Varanasi) my advice is if you want comfort , location and basic facilities ... shower tv etc come here . If you want the raddison then pay for it Ajays is on average £20 a night
But to make the most of your stay spend a tenner and get Lalit he took us to more places and taught us as much as we could handle in just one and a half days. You will be amazed at his confidence, intelligence , personality and help . Seriously we couldn't have done a third of what we have without him ..
Book him before he is poached by some high flying tour operator
