Esphahan is the Indian Specialty restaurant located inside the Oberoi Amanvilias hotel. The restaurant is in the basement, so doesn't offer the Taj Mahal views that the rooms offer. Live Indian music plays nightly until about 10:00 PM, which is strange because the second seating is at 9:30 PM. So, if you want to hear music, choose the early seating at 7:00 PM.
The service, like much of the service at the hotel, consisted of very young men who, while trying very hard and always courteous, were not experienced or thoroughly trained. Our waiter, trying to open a wine bottle, ended up spraying us with red wine, then while he did apologize he did not offer to have our clothes cleaned after dinner as you would expect. Later, when we brought it up to the manager, he did make the offer.
The food was hit and miss - we really enjoyed both the Chicken Biryani and the Rogan Josh, but the Quail Curry was not very good. Too soft and too sweet. The Naan was doughy and not fresh tasting. The wine was expensive, with a bottle of Kendall Jackson Zinfandel ($14.00 in the US) running a cool $100.00.
The ambience was nice, with the music at least part of the time, and candlelight. All in all, just a bit hit and miss with some rough edges, but mostly a nice experience.
