“Great location, quiet but only average value”

YWCA is in a perfect location, just down the road from the bus stop. It has huge grounds so is quite tranquil for India.

We took a private double room for R768 (inc taxes). It was huge with ensuite shower room and TV. However, the room was old with the classic signs of Indian inattention. The bathrooms have windows that don't shut so it makes the room very cold at night. The sheets are relatively clean though not fantastic. Furniture is basic but acceptable.

The services are pretty good - restaurant reasonably priced, efficient laundry and Internet connection good though overpriced at R60 per hour. The phone didn't work as they had not paid the bill!

However, we didn't find the place great value for R768 per night. We were moved to another room on the 3rd night (24) which was part of the 'deluxe cottage'. Nothing deluxe about it. Flaky paint, old sheets, crumbling walls and average bathroom.

I asked to settle the bill the night before we left as we had an early bus to take and I know how slow Indian reception staff can be in budget places. They said to come back in the morning, no choice. As predicted, in the morning they took ages despite me telling them how much it was and explaining I had to leave to get the 07.30 bus. The response was "don't worry bus at 07.45 and 08.30, all fine". No it wasn't. I wanted to take the 07.30 bus. The rickshaw they said they had booked never turned up, so ended up running down the road with our heavy bags to catch the bus. To make matters worse, they had no change so we ended up over paying. Not impressed.

So, if you don't mind rough around the edges and a few frustrating services touches, it's a friendly place with good size rooms in a perfect location near town.

thanks
james

“Good Place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2010

Good Place at a affordable cost and a very nice location. But they need to keep up with the maintainace and upkeep of the hotel. No Fire Place could be a tricky, if the night gets too cold. We have stayed in the Gate House Cottage, very nice and spacious place. The food is not all that great though.

“YWCA Guest house - VFM stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2010

My wife and I had planned a Ooty trip in October '09. And made the bookings at YWCA Anandagiri Ooty based on my friends' recommendation. Unfortunately we had to postpone it. Since we paid the advance to YWCVA, we requested them to postpone the booking. And they agreed! The first interaction with them was pleasant and amicable. We replanned and planned it again for January '10 to celebrate the New Year.
The YWCA is quite amazing. It is at the heart of the city, barely 1 km away from the market/bus stand and the lake. It is located by the side of the road which connects the market and the lake, next to the race course. They have ample parking space. The property is huge, old and quaint. They have different types of cottages spread across a huge property full of trees and flowering shrubs. They have a very nice garden. The staff there are warm hearted and jovial. Quite helpful too. The property in maintained well. However the buildings are pretty old and it shows. Since we had done the booking at the peak of the season they had only lower cottages available. The cottage was dimly lit, small and claustrophobic. There was hot water running, but no TV. We requested for a change of room and got a delux room in the main building. This room was really good with all good facilites and pretty much airy when compared to the cottages.
Another big minus is the quality of food. It is really bad and slightly expensive. Moreover there is less choice as well. But then there are quite a few reasonably restaurants/eateries nearby where you get good paranthas and curry.

Overall it is a good place for lodging at extremely low rates. Where can you get a cottage, albeit an old one, in Ooty for 350 Rs per day? Or a Bunglow suite for less than 1K?

“Very poor quality of rooms and standard of service.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2010

I stayed there with my extended family. We booked a bungalow suite and a standard room. They were not at all clean, they were smelly and stinking. The lights in the hall and toilet were not functioning despite many requests made to rectify. When we ordered for Tea the room service guy who came was drunk. The reception staff were courteous. There is an upright piano in the chapel which needs tuning very badly. On the whole it was not a good experience and i will definitely never go back.

“Old World, But not Maintained well.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2010

I had gone to YWCA with lot of hopes. It sounded like a quaint little place which will be charming.

While it still has the potential to be a well maintained charming place, It needs lot of effort to maintain it. One of the window glass panes were broken and staff knowlingly hid this fact from us and made us stay there.

THe fact is, I would one like to stay in this place when it is in better shape.
