YWCA is in a perfect location, just down the road from the bus stop. It has huge grounds so is quite tranquil for India.
We took a private double room for R768 (inc taxes). It was huge with ensuite shower room and TV. However, the room was old with the classic signs of Indian inattention. The bathrooms have windows that don't shut so it makes the room very cold at night. The sheets are relatively clean though not fantastic. Furniture is basic but acceptable.
The services are pretty good - restaurant reasonably priced, efficient laundry and Internet connection good though overpriced at R60 per hour. The phone didn't work as they had not paid the bill!
However, we didn't find the place great value for R768 per night. We were moved to another room on the 3rd night (24) which was part of the 'deluxe cottage'. Nothing deluxe about it. Flaky paint, old sheets, crumbling walls and average bathroom.
I asked to settle the bill the night before we left as we had an early bus to take and I know how slow Indian reception staff can be in budget places. They said to come back in the morning, no choice. As predicted, in the morning they took ages despite me telling them how much it was and explaining I had to leave to get the 07.30 bus. The response was "don't worry bus at 07.45 and 08.30, all fine". No it wasn't. I wanted to take the 07.30 bus. The rickshaw they said they had booked never turned up, so ended up running down the road with our heavy bags to catch the bus. To make matters worse, they had no change so we ended up over paying. Not impressed.
So, if you don't mind rough around the edges and a few frustrating services touches, it's a friendly place with good size rooms in a perfect location near town.
thanks
