If damp, dirty and dingy is what you are after then this is the place for you. The staff, also cold and unhelpful are just a taster of what the rooms are like. The room was so cold and going into the itchy damp sheets did not improve the situation. The private bathroom (on the otherside of the corridor) was chipped, old and dirty. There was no shower and needless to say no hot water. After a long journey this is not what we were expecting and not what the Lonely planet promised. Checking out just a few hours after checking in we were charged the full amount (the only place in India where we have had to pay in advance - and no wonder!). It is a horrible damp hole and way out of town. Cheap in India does not have to mean uncomfortable. We have been paying 600 rupees all round India and the standard of the YWCA falls a long way below anything we have seen.

The YWCA offers very basic accomodation and the lower cottage we stayed in was nice for two couples with a living room in which to play cards and watch the TV. However the cottage was very cold and the hot water did not always work. The staff are very friendly if somewhat ineffective (they often get orders wrong, take a long time to fix the lights etc.). An ok base for Ooty.

This place is a sprawling complex of many different types of rooms. There are regular rooms and bungalows and dorms for groups. We stayed in a bungalow looking across Ooty. This place is an old brewery and the room we had was sort of odd with the huge peaked ceilings but the price was cheap and the room was clean

Having seen all the mixed reviews o trip advisor we we're a bit confused. If you have been traveling around India for awhile and spending below 700 gnith, then the will be fine. If you are used to fancier htels, this will be cold and the beds will be too hard. The location is about a 10-15 mn walk from the New Market, acrss from the race track. It is quite and clean, but do not expect the world for their prices.
