After a very long wait, Madurai finally has a great Chinese restaurant. Not all Chinese restaurants in India are purely Chinese, they are Indianized Chinese restaurants to suit the local tastes. The restaurants that come close to the real Chinese flavors are badged as "Authentic" ones here. In such sense, Bamboo garden is a fine place for Chinese food in Madurai. I heard the chief cook is from Bombay and the restaurant is run by the Hajeemoosa family who are renowned textile people for generations. The interiors, menu and the way food is prepared and served shows the owner has a passion for food and just doesn't treat it as another of his businesses. I host travelers a lot and usually take them here as there are many dishes that are not spicy and will suit a westerners taste.
Their regular chicken fried rice is one of the best in the city with the right flavor and color and doesnt look like Biriyani like other restaurants serve. I wonder how they manage to prepare mutton so softly. Their crunchy mutton and dragon chicken are superb starters. From their special menu, I love the chicken sizzler which is served still when it smokes on a wooden plate on top of a Chinese cabbage leaf. And the honey & Lemon chicken is my favorite. You need to make multiple visits to find the best dish that you like. I make it a point to try different dishes every time. My kids love to go there on weekends. The "chilly Guangdong" is a must try. Its a little spicy mutton dish. I wonder how they could make mutton so soft!
Though some might feel its a little expensive than other restaurants in Madurai, I feel its worth to pay that price for what they serve! The place is clean, well maintained, servers are friendly and most of all they use real Chinese greens on their dishes! And their fried ice cream is a great dessert. In summers they have a special item called "coconut jelly". When I treid it the first time, I instantly fell in love with it. I wonder how the coconut water inside the coconut is made as a jelly? Awesome dessert with a natural touch!
I would highly recommend this place to travelers and for localites if you wish to show to your guests that Madurai is not only popular for Idli's and Biriyani's anymore!
