The Pug is a great base from which to explore Ranthambore national park due to its proximity to the entrance gates. The hotel itself consists of comfortable cottage style rooms, which all open out onto the lovely gardens which are undoubtably the hotel's best feature. The best time to enjoy these is before those early morning safaris, a morning cup of coffee surrounded by all the bird and wildlife was a great way to wake yourself up at 5.30 am. The gardens also contain a swimming pool - great for relaxing between safaris in the afternoon.
The service we received was good, we needed to move rooms during our stay because the air conditioning was not working properly (it was pumping out warm air - not good in the Indian summertime), however the staff were reasonably helpful and moved us as soon as we asked. The next room we were given was fine.
The food was fairly average, enjoyable the first time, but there wasn't much variety in the buffet. I was ok with the choice of Indian dishes, but others in my family are fussier and struggled to find food they could eat. One further point about the food is that you will be charged for every little thing you ask for which isn't in the buffet.
One piece of advice about booking safairs, it is worthwhile being quite pushy about which zone you are booked into - as they are likely to book zones 1 or 2 in this hotel. You have little or no chance of spotting a tiger in these zones. It really is worth sticking to your guns and demanding to be booked into zone 3 or 4, where your chances are greatly increased.
