We returned after 3 years to stay once again in the very special Palace of Devgarh (Deogarh), which we had been so impressed with before. The family have been active in the interim, upgrading and renovating rooms and wings of the Palace to accomodate the increasing numbers of tourists who wish to visit. There are now more Excursions on offer, all of which in some way enhance the experience of staying in this unique and exceptional place.
We stayed again in the Royal Suite which has had a face-lift, but was essentially as we left it - a magical entrance room with mirrored glass mosaics and coloured lights, and a spacious bedroom, dressing room and bathroom with period features and tasteful decorations and sepia photos of the family, and finally a serene terrace with cushioned sofa balcony, views over the shadey garden and a mosaic jacuzzi!
There are several choices for evening dining, all serving regional cuisine of a good standard, and one can even arrange a cooking demonstration with the Rani (princess) supervising the assembly of a special 'Maharani Meal'!
There is now a guided tour (with head-phones) taking in the whole Palace, and explaining the 'way of life' during the times of the Raj. One can also take the local train for a morning trip through the local countryside, or arrange an evening jaunt in one of the family's Classic cars to a local temple and sunset lake spot for tea and tiffin!
My favourite trip however, was to take an early morning walk (with guide) through the town and around the lake to thesmall fort of Seen Sagar (run as a guest house) - one passes through a small village (and on this occasion a gypsy encampment) and past a large and several small lakes, full of birdlife and dreamy scenery. The Hotel then has the Dodge Jeep waiting to return you back for breakfast!
The family were all most hospitable and kind, and we look forward to visiting again one day, with family and friends.
