“A homestay I never want to leave - so I keep coming back”

I have visited Durag Niwas 3 times (2007, 2010, 2011) & each time I extend my stay. This family home is the perfect place to stay when traveling. The rooms are cute, clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated so you instantly feel that you can put your bags down and have a rest. The main charm of the place is the gorgeous central courtyard where you can sit and eat/drink, meet other travelers, chill out and all this while the family's regular life is going on as this is their home. Govind, Mukta and their family are incredibly welcoming and always super friendly no matter how many questions you have or how many things you may need. Food is home cooked and in the evening you have the choice to eat typical family food of rice, veg, chapatti. This is wonderful. I have found all services to be extremely efficient - breakfast, lunch, dinner, laundry, ticket booking, village tour, shopping help, trip planning guidance. On arrival you are given a map of Jodhpur and a list of locals' insight tips that include delightful details such as where to eat the best lassi, samosa, omlette shop, 40rs into town etc... Other details that make a difference are a library borrow & exchange and free wifi or a computer for guests to use on an honesty system. You can lounge on the roof terrace on large cushions shaded by sari curtains during the day with a great view of the fort and palace. The Sambhali Trust that works to help empower women and girls from Dalit (untouchable) communities was founded by Govind - the guesthouse owner. Workshops and training take place on the first floor of this gorgeous guesthouse. Volunteers are long term guests. This also is another reason to stay at Durag Niwas.

“Home-style service from some of the nicest guys in India.”

Durag Niwas is great because of the honest service and values of the managing team. The services offered (laundry, internet, tours, etc.) are plenty, the restaurant serves some great hot sandwiches and french fries (if you're sick of all the naan and dal...), there's a comfy rooftop pillow area great for relaxing with some local wine and the sunset illuminating the distant hilltop fort. On-site, Durag Niwas is also home to Sambhali Trust, which helps young women get a leg up with English and other practical skills. If you have time, you're welcome to help out.

The prices are unbeatable, though the room quality could be improved. They were a little dusty and dingy (both the 2 double rooms on the first floor and the suite upstairs), and if this can be improved upon, then the guys will have an even better guest house. Their motto says it all: "COME AS A TOURIST- STAY AS A GUEST - LEAVE AS A FRIEND." Couldn't agree more.

(For reference, we stayed at the following places over a 2 week tour: Delhi (Hotel Kwality, 2*, Park New Delhi, 5*), Agra (Hotel Sheela, 2*), Jaipur (Hotel Pearl Palace, 4*), Jodhpur (Durag Niwas Guest House, 3*), Udaipur (Kankarwa Haveli, 5*)and Jaisalmer (Hotel Jeet Mahal, 3*).)

I am travelling through India since some years, and for a european person the noise, chaos, dirt, hustle and bustle of India can make you feel tired and exhausted.
I am always happy to finally arrive in Durag Niwas, where I anjoy Govind and his families hospitality. It is not about luxury, but in this simple but lovely decorated guesthouse me and my friends can relax, feel at home and protected.

“Home away from home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2011

We loved our stay at Durag Niwas, it has a great homely atmosphere in a quiet part of town but is still close enough to main parts of city and points. The rooms are simple but clean, the food is awesome and the service is outstanding. When ever I come back to Jodhpur this is where i will stay

Keep up the good work guys!!!!!!

“Best place to stay in Jodhpur”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2011

I love Durag Niwas. The first time i went there (it was my 3rd time this time), I felt I was in a story from the One thousand and one nights!
The single dinner table is a great way to meet fanstastic people from all over the world.
Goving the owner is just woderful and so thoughful with the guest. He is also a great and passionate person to speak with.
The rooms are spacious, very well decorated and the special colorful rajasthani touch add something to this already lovely and charming house.
The staff is great and the food is fabulous! I'd never had such a delicious sahi paneer!!!
The plus of this house is the coziness of the house with its roof top terrace (great to spend a whole afternnon reading or resting!) and the fact that it is located a 5 minutes rickshaw drive away from the city and clock tower: very close but far enough to not be in the busy/fuzzy part of the city that is great to experience during the day but can quickly become very tiring. It is also a 5/10 minutes walk from several very good and unusual outdoor restaurant, all reasonnably priced.
I could only recommend to stay with Goving and his family in Durag Niwas.
