I have visited Durag Niwas 3 times (2007, 2010, 2011) & each time I extend my stay. This family home is the perfect place to stay when traveling. The rooms are cute, clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated so you instantly feel that you can put your bags down and have a rest. The main charm of the place is the gorgeous central courtyard where you can sit and eat/drink, meet other travelers, chill out and all this while the family's regular life is going on as this is their home. Govind, Mukta and their family are incredibly welcoming and always super friendly no matter how many questions you have or how many things you may need. Food is home cooked and in the evening you have the choice to eat typical family food of rice, veg, chapatti. This is wonderful. I have found all services to be extremely efficient - breakfast, lunch, dinner, laundry, ticket booking, village tour, shopping help, trip planning guidance. On arrival you are given a map of Jodhpur and a list of locals' insight tips that include delightful details such as where to eat the best lassi, samosa, omlette shop, 40rs into town etc... Other details that make a difference are a library borrow & exchange and free wifi or a computer for guests to use on an honesty system. You can lounge on the roof terrace on large cushions shaded by sari curtains during the day with a great view of the fort and palace. The Sambhali Trust that works to help empower women and girls from Dalit (untouchable) communities was founded by Govind - the guesthouse owner. Workshops and training take place on the first floor of this gorgeous guesthouse. Volunteers are long term guests. This also is another reason to stay at Durag Niwas.
