Although this hotel looks great in the lobby and the marble, winding staircase is lovely, the front is on a dirty, noisy street and things did not work.. First of all, the desk man could not open our room, so he picked another empty room down the hall (first bad sign when the key does not work). I went to put our water bottles into the bar fridge and it was hot; then the sink in bathroom was plugged and the water did not drain out; the toilet flushed by pushing my full weight against the button and then it shuttered. I called down to the desk; it took overnight to get the problems fixed; they brought in another fridge which turned on but did not get cold.
The men who came to fix things were very nice, but the desk guy should have got things fixed that first night- the sink repair took 10 minutes, for example.
The room was nice enough and comfortable enough to sleep, but it looked onto a small open area of a backstreet that was full of garbage with wild dogs roaming and barking all night. Getting ready for the day, the next morning, there was a huge squeal and they were attacking a baby wild pig.
I asked for a quieter room facing inside the complex which has a nice looking pool and garden. The hotel seemed empty but for a couple of guests; they would not change rooms.
Our small evening meal was okay, but the dahl was watery and not worth eating; the breakfast was okay with a good waiter and a fellow who made omelettes which was nice.
On leaving, I suggested to the desk guy, who spoke little English, that he might absorb the cost of our laundry...about 10 $ for all the problems (or not charge us for our dinner would have been a nice gesture) and he nodded , and then later made me pay checkout saying he has no authority. At this point I asked for the manager who was 'out of town, in London'. On leaving, he came out and asked for us to pay for a bottle of water which was open in our hot fridge. This bottle had not been refreshed and was untouched by us. Why would we drink hot water? He did not believe us and said the room had been prepared with fresh bottles. He seemed to forget that the room we were booked in was not used by us, so maybe he got mixed up. With the state of the room, it looked like it had not been used for a while.
All in all, this guy was trying in a way to make things better in a place where a lot went wrong. I think he had too much on his plate, but that is the owner's business to get it right so guests are happy and recommend it to others.
Leaving the keys on an unattended front desk for anyone to take was also not too secure feeling. If this guy is always going to rooms to see the problems, that desk is empty. We kept our key with us.
Overall, too many problems, with no real effort to make it better for us, with a fellow in charge who spoke little English and who did not have the 'authority' to give me some compensation. Lots of nice marble and a pool did not make up for a bad stay.
