The state government run MTDC Hotel Flamingo Resort is the only hotel at Malshej Ghat, the other one i.e. Su-Shant Holiday Resort being currently closed for renovation.
The building is typical government style PWD architecture, not properly maintained and consequently quite shabby. Having said that, the rooms are clean, very large and value for money. Booking can be done online from the Maharshtra Tourism website, from any authorised MTDC agent, or directly on the phone 24hours before, as we did last week.
The hotel enjoys the best location on a 700m high plateau overlooking dense jungles in a deep valley, the 1300m high Harishchandragad mountain range, the vast Pimpalgaon Joga flamingo reservoir - and millions of waterfalls in the monsoons.
The waterfalls are what Malshej Ghat is best known for and the MTDC Hotel is always fully booked on monsoon weekends. Weekends however, are not the best time to go for families as Malshej Ghat is full of drunken, rowdy, all-male picnic crowds on these days.
My octogenarian parents were with us so we booked two rooms. On arrival at the hotel, the courteous Manager observing my elderly parents, kindly gave us two connecting rooms without us having to ask for it, in fact I was not even aware that they had such rooms. Our rooms were very large and clean with verandahs overlooking the plateau. These rooms [Special Deluxe] are in the newly built block, so were not as shabby looking as the ones in the old block. The linen was clean and freshly laundered. The bathrooms however, though spic and span a with a large hot water boiler, were small. Not surprisingly, the plumbing was not at its best! It was a good walk from our rooms to the restaurant, not a problem as such but it was raining and the unsheltered pathway was slippery so we had to be extra careful to see that my parents did not fall.
Adequate parking is available.
All MTDC hotels give their restaurants out on franchise to a sub contractor and this one was no different. This one had the standard Indian and Chinese on offer. The food was not exceptional but reasonably tasty. In any event, there being no other restaurant in the vicinity, we had no other choice but to eat here.
The cloud had lifted the next morning giving us fabulous views from our balcony. My husband and I decided to go for a walk on the plateau. We placed an order for breakfast at the restaurant and requested them to deliver it to my parents in their room, which the restaurant manager assured us he would do. To our surprise, when we returned from our walk about an hour and half later, they had not done so. The restaurant manager sheepishly said that the waiter he instructed to do the delivery "had gone for his bath" !!! I would not have minded much if it had been for us but when elderly people are made to wait, it is just not fair. Anyway, we collected the breakfast and took it to our rooms ourselves. Very poor service.
That apart, the MTDC is worth a few days stay during and just after the monsoons for there is much to see and enjoy in the Malshej Ghat region.
