We were lucky to stay at Akkara over Christmas - to have our share of the traditional Keralan meals, to meet three generations of the family and to welcome the local kids singing carols and playing Santa on Christmas Eve. We stayed 3 nights, walking to the village, looking at spices in the garden and visiting Kumarakom one early morning. Above all, we enjoyed the huge variety of dishes prepared for us. The Wifi worked well, so we could connect to our families at Christmas.
This is a real homestay, not a guest house, so for those who want and appreciate the difference, Akkara House will be a memorable experience.
You do need to be prepared to pay for transport (car or boat), as Akkara is far from town, in a remote bend of the river. That was one of its charms for us - after arriving at busy, dusty, noisy Kottayam, we loved the courtyard, the flowers and the cool roof terrace.
