Now there are many guesthouses and homestays who call themselves “home away from home”. If there is one who absolutely deserves this title it’s Sithära in Fort Kochi, Kerala.
Looking back on it, we didn’t stay long enough. But reason enough to go back there again one day. Why? First of all the owners, Harry-John Bernard and his wife Mercy. Delightful, quiet people with hospitality written all over them. Next the house. A villa with great rooms; clean and safe. And a nice garden surrounding it, filled with herbs and plants. Don’t be surprised when you’ll find them in your dinner! Brings me to the hidden treasure of this place. The cooking!
The Bernards have a splendid offer of real Keralan food. The best of homemade cooking I have experienced in hundreds of homes and guesthouses. The finess and delicate way of preparation makes it special. It’s an experience of taste and sensation. Important to mention is that beside they can suggest many delicate dishes, their first question is: what would you like to have. For me and my partner who is on a strict diet (celiac disease) there were no problems at all. It is absolutely helpful in these circumstances that the Bernards speak English fluently. Even more to have nice conversation about whatever you like. (Small hint: take a look at the books on the first floor and you will find some amazing titles!)
About Sithära one thing is for sure: we felt great!
