Although this place looked quite quaint on the internet sites, I can't review the rooms as we never even actually got to stay in them!
I booked three rooms at this place for a one night (New Year's Eve) stay for Jan 1 2012 via Hotel Club for our party of 9 (6 adults and 3 children spread across the three rooms). We were flying in from Hyderabad on our way to Allepey and Thekkady and were intending to spend New Years' Eve in Fort Kochi. My booking was made on Dec 13th with the help of a Hotel Club online host, and I received emails confirming this booking before I left Australia.
We arrived in India on Dec 25th and spent some time in Hyderabad with friends. On the day before our booking for Rossitta Wood Castle, I received an email from Hotel Club saying that Rossitta Wood Castle had cancelled our booking due to 'unforeseen circumstances'. The day before! For 3 rooms! For a party of 9! For a peak period night! Hotel Club offered an alternative which was not acceptable, an hour away from the Fort Kochi tourist area in Ernakalum business district.
I declined the alternative offer and when we arrived in Fort Kochi went to the Rossitta Wood Castle to see what the 'unforeseen circumstances' were - maybe the place had been flooded or burnt down or some other calamity. It was still standing and appeared to be fully operational, so we went in to ask why our booking had been cancelled. The excuse - they had not received our Hotel Club booking! I asked if they could ring Hotel Club, but they apparently 'couldn't get through'. So we left it and with the help of another local hotel manager, found some accommodation in the tourist area of Fort Kochi for the night, albeit pretty basic due to heavy bookings.
On returning home at the end of Jan I found that I had been charged for these rooms at Rossitta Wood Castle and there was no refund as promised by Hotel Club, so I emailed Hotel Club to find out if this place had been contacted re our booking initially and where our refund was, and yes, they could provide me with details of their booking communication and confirmation. So Rossitta Wood Castle had clearly overbooked, or received a better offer for people staying longer than one night, and our rooms had been 're-allocated'.
I find this clearly unethical and unacceptable in the tourist industry for such a premium night and so my tip is - be careful of this place! How can a place overbook *three* rooms - the place is fairly small anyway, and why only a day's notice when I had booked three weeks in advance? The alternative accommodation offered by Hotel Club was clearly unacceptable, an hour away from the Fort Kochi tourist area and in the Ernakalum business district, not exactly where we wanted to spend New Years' Eve.
I have to say our extended family spent four weeks travelling throughout India and Nepal as independent travellers and this was the *only* accommodation hiccup in the whole trip - clearly a pretty unacceptable one too. We will never attempt to stay here again and probably won't use Hotel Club again either. We found Wotif.com and Booking.com to be much better alternatives.
