I was totally enthralled by my week-long stay at The Pimenta! Jacob, the host, was a most charming and thoughtful gentleman, who shared his passion for the local food and culture with a refreshing sensitivity. I was expecting a week of cooking lessons in a lovely rural setting, but experienced so much more - so many interesting excursions to local spots, not ones normally visited by tourists, all accompanied by Jacob's comfortable banter with the shopkeepers and artisans. Jacob was truly vested in encouraging a real engagement with the local life of Kerala. The trip to the tea plantations of Munnar was stunning, rivaling the rice terraces of Bali, and again, enhanced by Jacob's knowledge of the area, including some special places to visit.
The accommodations were charming. I loved the natural decorations, with a view from the bungalow and veranda of the forest canopy lending a feeling of being in a well-appointed treehouse. It was a magical place.
And the cooking was fabulous, with recipes well-planned and much enjoyed. Jacob teaches one to understand the fundamentals and sequence of handling the ingredients of a dish, not simply to follow a recipe. And he has an impish sense of humor to add to the spice of the dishes!
I am thrilled that I was lucky to have found The Pimenta as a destination for a fabulous vacation, and would recommend a stay here for anyone wanting to experience Kerala in all its natural glory. And to spend some time with Jacob, truly a local treasure.
