“Delightful experience, more than I could hope for!”

I was totally enthralled by my week-long stay at The Pimenta! Jacob, the host, was a most charming and thoughtful gentleman, who shared his passion for the local food and culture with a refreshing sensitivity. I was expecting a week of cooking lessons in a lovely rural setting, but experienced so much more - so many interesting excursions to local spots, not ones normally visited by tourists, all accompanied by Jacob's comfortable banter with the shopkeepers and artisans. Jacob was truly vested in encouraging a real engagement with the local life of Kerala. The trip to the tea plantations of Munnar was stunning, rivaling the rice terraces of Bali, and again, enhanced by Jacob's knowledge of the area, including some special places to visit.

The accommodations were charming. I loved the natural decorations, with a view from the bungalow and veranda of the forest canopy lending a feeling of being in a well-appointed treehouse. It was a magical place.

And the cooking was fabulous, with recipes well-planned and much enjoyed. Jacob teaches one to understand the fundamentals and sequence of handling the ingredients of a dish, not simply to follow a recipe. And he has an impish sense of humor to add to the spice of the dishes!

I am thrilled that I was lucky to have found The Pimenta as a destination for a fabulous vacation, and would recommend a stay here for anyone wanting to experience Kerala in all its natural glory. And to spend some time with Jacob, truly a local treasure.

Room Tip: they're all lovely!

“Beautiful Kerela”

I stayed at the pimenta for 3 nights in august and had such a lovely time I have been meaning to write a review ever since.

The accomodation is in comfertable cottages amongst the trees. When I arrived in a taxi from cochi that Jacob ( the host) had organised he greeted me with a fresh juice in the common area which is filled with cook books

. During the day Jacob took me on trips around Kerala visiting a pineapple market, rubber band factory, vanilla factory and more. One of my favourite trips was on a small boat at a point where 3 rivers all join into one, it was so beautiful. During these trips and cooking lessons Jacob was taking lots of pictures which he put onto a CD for me to take home and also made an extra copy for me to send home incase anything happened to the first.

I loved the cooking lessons and learnt how to make lots of dishes. At the begining of my stay Jacob asked if there was anything in particular I wanted to learn to make so I can now cook dosa and make lime pickle.

Jacob made sure I got to cochi in time for my onward train and sent me on my way this some spices and some cooking utensils we got on one of our trips. I can not reccomend this place highly enough.

“wonderful food, host, and housing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

Our bungalow was wonderful -clean large and with surrounding gardens it felt totally rural and peaceful. despite being not far off the main road. the food was fabulous. we did not cook, but we did eat well. The highlight was spending time with the host, Jacob Matthews and participating in the trips he arranged for us. we saw places and things we would have missed without his guidance. We enjoyed his company at dinner and found our
three nights there to be interesting and pleasant. jacob really thinks of everything and tries to accommodate each guest.

“An Organic Foodie Break With a Difference!”

I stayed at The Pimenta for three days and thoroughly enjoyed every moment. The organisational and hosting skills of Jacob were exceptional. We were initially welcomed with fruit juice and a lunch at which Jacob joined us. He then took us on a local tour of the area seeing the real Kerala. We visited such places as a Pineapple market, an Indian lorry painting workshop, the local supermarket with a guide to all the spices and a trip to the top of the hills to see the magnificent views. The evenings were spent with cooking lessons where we all joined in, then, of course, eating our efforts! The following day was spent with more sightseeing and also a punt up the river Keralan style. All of which Jacob had organised for us. The bungalows were comfortable enough though a bit basic but it seemed to add to the 'natural' feel. Thank you Jacob for an unforgettable experience.

“The perfect organic, sustainable green vacation for foodies and curious people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

The place is just small and lovely. The cottages are beautiful, with all the comfort you wish. Jacob is a fabulous host: he did everything possible to make our stay at the farm as pleasant as possible. I love his integrity and all his efforts to offer an organic, sustainable green vacation for foodies and curious people! As a personal chef and health counselor, I particularly appreciated the cooking classes (all the recipes are really easy!). All my clients love the healthy and delicious recipes I learned at the Pimenta. Thank you Jacob for the great time at your farm.
