“Super location, big rooms, great place for Christmas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

We really enjoyed our stay here - spacious upstairs rooms. The hotel is fairly basic - and all the hotels are expensive in Fort Cochin - but it gave us exactly what we needed as a base to explore for a couple of nights. There were plenty of places for the kids to do their exam revision. The wifi provided in the main dining / seating area stretched (just) to our rooms.
Often we had the place to ourselves and were able to skype home from the comfy sofas in the main upstairs area on Christmas day.

Breakfast was fairly basic - although they were quite flexible on timings (10am).

The biggest disappointment was the mandatory gala dinner at the sister hotel, Koder House where they over promised and under delivered, with appalling service and unclear instructions on what we could order.

Room Tip: Go for upstairs rooms

“new year stay at fort kochi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

we were recommended by a friend of us who stayed in victory dawn. The hotel is situated in quiet corner of fort kochi. Rooms are large and clean. staffs were helpful. We had a excellent new year eve dinner in koder house , we could order any thing from the menu, we recomend seafood platter. we enjoyed the carnival the next day. overall a memorable stay.

Room Tip: we recommended kannan devan and laxmi estate rooms.

“Not what we expected”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

We wanted to stay at Koder House but as it was full Victory Dawn was suggested as a nearby alternative. Described as a "boutique" hotel it was extremely basic and sorely needs updating. Although our room was really large it was sparsely furnished with 1930's furniture and looked extremely tired & grubby (although it was actually quite clean). The hotel has a great location within 5 mins from Jew Town and walking distance to Chinese fishing nets. Most of the staff did not speak English (unusual in Kerala). The breakfast was the worst we had in our month in India - it took 20 minutes to get a cold cup of coffee and cold toast and then another 10 minute wait for the poached eggs to go with the toast. Better to have breakfast next door at Open Hand Cafe - terrific service & good fresh food. There are loads of homestayss in the vicinity which all looked far more welcoming and are probably much cheaper!

Room Tip: If you choose to stay here, ask for an upsstairs room (3 on ground 3 on first ) we experienced a lot...

“Great location, not a lot of service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

Wish we had seen the reviews recommending that we avoid the downstairs rooms. It's a genteel guest house that gives a glimpse into what life may have been like in old Fort Cochin. Rooms are huge, and clean, sparsely furnished, with OK bathrooms. There are only 5-6 rooms, so not a lot of staff or service. We paid $140/night, which seemed high considering the level of service elsewhere for that price in India, but it was better than the more famous nearby Koder House, its sister hotel, where our friends stayed and complained about the noise. Victory Dawn has no wifi, but has a computer that guests can use for Internet. One weird thing was that they serve breakfast only til 9am. We got food a little later, but it was clearly an inconvenience. One morning they called and then knocked at the door to let us know they were ending breakfast and we should get up if we wanted to eat. But that location made up for pretty much all the shortcomings. It's a short walk to the waterfront, the churches, the shopping, etc. in the old part of town. We were there for New Year's Eve, and the town had a wonderful vibe with all the people celebrating in the streets beneath the fireworks.

Room Tip: Upstairs is the way to go.

“Avoid the downstairs room”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

We arrived at this hotel with quite high expectations based on other reviews (and also because we had paid such a high rate.....3-4 times more than other places we stayed at in India). We later discovered that as this was New Year, the prices had been racked up considerably.
Unfortunately our expectations were not met. Our room for the first night was on the ground floor-although spacious it was very musty and we soon discovered that there was not one window to open for fresh air-even in the bathroom (and no extractor fan here either). The room was clean but the decor very basic.
To his credit, the manager was very apologetic and agreed to move us to an upstairs room the next day, which proved to be of a much better standard, with plenty of windows.
Breakfast was very ordinary, and the service was very slow (despite only one other couple eating there).
If the price had been one third of that which we paid, we would have felt it was a satisfactory hotel for the price but nothing exceptional. As it was, we felt that we received very poor value for money.

Room Tip: Ask for an upstairs room!!!
